Wednesday Photo-Chimps! I Swear I am Working With Chimps!!!

Ok so I am not working with chimps... But a few years back once I went to the San Diego Zoo I caught this great picture of this one eating and giving me the stare down!!! These monkey's were probably one of my most favorite exhibits because they were soo funny...

The zookeepers gave them a little burlap sac to play with and one would sit on it and the other would drag them around and then you would have another come and try to take the sac away for himself.. It was to funny!! If you ever go to the San Diego Zoo or just once you go to your local zoo if they have a Chimpanzee exhibit just spend some time there watching these funny animals they will make you smile for the rest of the day!

Are There Just Too Many Baby Elephants At Our Zoo ?

Are There Just Too Many Baby Elephants At Our Zoo ?

According to some sources here in San Diego, there are. Well at least too many healthy adult male elephants. Seems some animal rights group published an article recently naming the San Diego Zoo as one of the 10 worst zoos for elephants. Supposedly these happy guys here are mating to often. So what are the gals supposed to do. Just Say NO. Right?

This young guy is one of 4 born last last year and a cutie he is too. When I see these offspring, my mind doesn't go to that sort of topic. I think how wonderful we are to be blessed with yet another baby elephant. These little ones play together in a safe and healthy envireonment. But as Lenn Harley would say, "I am no expert " and I'm certainly not an expert but I happen to think our Zoo and Safari Park have done a masterful job making these wonderful elephants very happy in an absolutely incredible environment. All I know is that they all seem to be smiling when I am there. Did you ever see an elephant fly smile?

Elephant Odyssey At San Diego Zoo Wins People's Choice Award

Each year, the San Diego Architectural community holds it's annual Orchids and Onions awards. This year, there were two people choice awards and one of those awards was given to the San Diego Zoo for it's Elephant Odyssey attraction as best in Urban Design and Planning.

San Diego Real Estate - Zoo's Elephant Odyssey

The Orchids and Onion program was instituted by the San Diego Architectural Foundation to provide education to the public about architecture, both the good and the not so good. The People's Choice award is determined by online balloting by the public. I happen think the voters made a great choice for this years People's Choice Orchid Award . I think the residents at the Odyssey would also agree.

Was It Just Luck or....

Was It Just Luck or Seizing Opportunity at the Right Place at the Right Moment ?

As a member of the San Diego Zoological Society, one of the advantages of membership is having unlimited access to both our San Diego Zoo and our Wild Animal Park ( recently re-named to Safari Park). Today in the mail I received my Zoo news magazine which contained a beautiful full color calendar for 2011. I flipped through the pages and low and behold I saw a photograph of a Cheetah that looked almost exactly like one I had taken. I looked through my photo collection and there it was. There is not a doubt in my mind that the photo used in the calendar was taken at the very same moment I had taken mine ( would have had to have been less than a second's difference in timing). The difference in the photos was so slight most would not even recognize the difference. But there was a difference, slight as it is in the positioning of the Cheetah's tail and and her body being about an inch forward of her location on the tree trunk. Guessing less than a second involved to move about an inch. I had posted the photo in a blog post if you would like to see what i am referring to. Regrettably I can't show you the one on the calendar.

And while I thought that photo was a real treasure and I was so thrilled when I took it, as luck would have it, I had taken a rapid series of photos of this animal's movement just prior to the animal jumping up and posing for the camera on the large tree trunk. While I was studying the minuit differences of the two photos, I remembered separating a particular photo and putting it in a special file intending on having it reproduced on canvas. I hope you enjoy this, I think this photo is particularly special in it's composition.
