A tour through one of San Francisco's hilly neighborhoods

A ride down Corbett Avenue in San Francisco, California...

"A narrow, winding, hilly street, today's Corbett Avenue resembles the old trail it probably once was. It is one of the oldest thoroughfares in San Francisco's 'outlands,' a word referring to the southwest part of town...Corbett is quaint, country like and very San Franciscan."  (from a Historical Essay by Mae Silver).

Local rumor has it that Corbett Avenue was originally an old Ohlone Indian route that eventually wound it's way to the skyline section of the western hills and access points along the Pacific coast.  In digging a little further, I found an interesting article by Mae Silver on FoundSF.org that really gets into the history of the thoroughfare...how it once had a "toll" section along with some hints as to how it got its name.   Of course, there's no doubt that the upper sections of Market street (which virtually parallels Corbett Avenue) were constructed to conform to the natural curvature of the hill.  This was part of the Post War expansion and accommodation of the automobile for the "next" generation of commuters.

What I personally enjoy about Corbett Avenue, besides its relaxing and quiet setting,  is the fact it leads directly to my office on 17th Street!  No stop signs from the Clayton Street intersection until you get to 17th, and a nice leisurely drive without racing down Market Street and playing "beat the traffic lights".  I took a quick video of my drive back from showing property in Glen Park yesterday, and thought I'd share it with you here.  It begins along Upper Market (before it becomes Portola Drive) and winds its way down to Clayton and eventually onto Corbett.  Enjoy the ride.
