Time Travel (back to the future?)...

jetsonsW hen I was a kid, it seemed that the space age and a "modern" future was the most alluring dream to be had.  I couldn't wait for all the flying cars and space needle dwellings that were anticipated to become mainstream by the year 2000...(Cool...we'll finally be rid of all these "old" houses and ugly station wagons!).  Movies and books about the future held such promise of a carefree and "leisurely" lifestyle because of all the automation in this "new world".  I couldn't wait.  "zap"...lunch is ready!

Hmmm.

I'm now 49, I live in a house built in 1906, I drive a station wagon, (a good looking one, mind you), and am required to separate my garbage into three different bins....(wasn't this stuff supposed to be instantly vaporized by the touch of a button and somehow turned into clean air?).  I've seen the future and it's OK.  We're getting there, and the advancements in medicine and and technology are quite impressive so far.  I think we just got a little excited back in the late 50's/early 60's and conveniently chose not to factor in life's little bureaucracies and realities...you know...economies, international conflicts, politics, etc.

And you know what?  I'm OK with it.  In fact, as I've gotten older, I've become more interested in what time was like long before I came into the picture.  I enjoy living in the present, but I often find myself dreaming of the past.  I'm part of that "one foot in/one foot out generation".  I had a typwriter in college.  We had a rotary dial phone in our family home, and would curse our friends that had more that one "9" or "0" in their phone number, (3 dit dit dit, 6 dit dit dit dit dit dit, 9 dit dit dit dit dit dit dit dit dit...).  Black and White TV was acceptable (until about 1970)...Oh, and it was free of charge to watch

But don't get me wrong...I don't miss any of that (except for the free TV perhaps).  I just like to remind myself that we all survived and made our way in those "low" tech and "no" tech years.  We made our way...perhaps a little more slowly and patiently, but we made our way.  The segment below that aired on CBS's 60 Minutes this past Sunday really hit it home for me (literally and figuratively).  The movie clip they highlight has been circulating on YouTube for some time now, so It's nothing new.  But the story behind it is captivating.  When one of the interviewees is asked, "What is it that moves us so when we see something like this?", he replies: "It's uncanny...first off, to see something that's so old and almost an alternate universe..."

That was then...this is now.

Luxury Condo at the Ritz Carlton Up For Auction on December 10

11-24-10
Cece Blase
Cece Blase: Real Estate Agent in San Francisco, CA

A bank-owned condominium at the luxury Ritz-Carlton Residences is coming up for auction on December 10. It has 1195 square feet and a floor plan with two master suites separated by an open kitchen/living/dining area.

Until the auction date, it is being marketed in a traditional manner-- with a presence on the MLS and regular weekend open houses and Brokers Tours. The listing price is $949,905. There is no minimum bid.

Like the Four Seasons, the St. Regis and The Millennium, the Ritz Carlton Residences come with hotel style amenities and a quality of service in line with its high-end brand. The Ritz Carlton Residences differs from other luxury condo buildings because a number of units on the lower floors were developed and sold as tenancy-in-common shares. In a hotter market, a 1/12th ownership in a luxury "club residence" at the Ritz was an appealing idea for those who wanted a pied-a-terre, but didn't think they'd need it for more than 30 days a year. These club residences are now being resold much lower than their original purchase prices. An MLS search of club residences shows the least expensive is $125,000.

The MLS shows only one sale of a traditional condominium residence at The Ritz Carlton Residences, a 1680 square foot unit that closed for $1,325,000 this past summer.

I call the kind of views offered by the Ritz Carlton Residences, "Christmas Tree Views" because it feels like you're inside one when you look out the windows at night. The charming turn-of-the century downtown architecure makes for an unusual and charming Cityscape that differs from what you find in buildngs on the other side of Market Street.

The most noteworthy feature of the Ritz Carlton's Downtown/Barbary Coast location is the shopping nearby. The Westfield Center, with Bloomingdales and Nordstrom's is just one block down Market Street, and Union Square, considered by many to be one of the country's most vibrant shopping neighborhoods is just two blocks up Geary.
