About San Francisco's Hayes Valley

I almost feel like I'm cheating on Pay it Forward this week because I get at least as much as I give with this one, PLUS I've checked a task off my holiday list. AND I score extra points with family members who like reality TV. AND I get something good to eat,

You may not know (at least I didn't until two days ago) that Yigit Pura of San Francisco's Taste Catering just won Top Chef: Just Desserts. I'm a fan of the Top Chef franchise, and make a point of patronizing establishments run by some of the cool, gorgeous women who have appeared on the show--

Two that I really love are in Hayes Valley: Liz Falkner's Citizen Cake on Gough and Grove, and Jaime's Laurent's Absinthe, just around the corner on Hayes at Octavia. Absinthe also has a cafe annex, Arlequin, that has one of the best outdoor dining patios in the city.

Ms. Pura's desserts, however, are harder to obtain-- she only caters private events and (as far as I know) has no public venue to display her wares. Since I don't have the scratch to put on a big wedding or private party right now, it seemed unlikely that I was going to get a chance to taste her fare.

THEN, I hear about Taste Catering's participation in Gilt City's "Give Pie" Thanksgiving event. For $35.00 I get to buy one of Pura's pumpkin pies and also get the warm fuzzy feeling of contributing to SkillsUSA: a national charity supporting career and technical education, and to local and regional organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Lupus Foundation, and the Duke Ellington School for the Arts.

I can definitely get behind any organization that promotes career and technical education. Our country's anticipated lack of a skilled workforce is a serious problem (and let me plug another cool organization dedicated to a similar endeavor, my friend Donna Milgram's National Institute for Women in Trades, Technology and Science.)
