Cal State San Marcos is enrolling students for summer session through its extended learning program and has expanded its lower-division classes to help compensate for cuts to community college summer sessions.
The university is offering about 350 classes this summer--nearly twice as many as last summer. The program is open to continuing Cal State San Marcos students as well as other "university student home for vacation,high school students and professional looking to update skills,.
With about 100 lower-division courses offerings the program is also designed to help community colleges with budget problems.
Many community colleges in the region are trimming summer sessions to conserve funds in anticipation of a 10 percent state funding cut next year.
Palomar College to eliminate about 300 classes -- half of its planned summer course offerings and Miracosta College may cut 10 percent of its summer classes. The San Diego community college District is slashing up to 90 percent of its summer course's, and Mt San Jacinto College will offer no summer session..
While community college students pay $26.00 per unit for summer sessions at their campus they would pay between $275.00 $345 per unit for summer courses at the university.
Classes offered at Cal State San Marcos include high-demand core classes in math, physics, chemistry, social sciences and economics which many students need to complete their degrees or to continue in advanced course series. Thrown in the mix are some specialized electives such as "Coffee, Chocolate and Cocaine. A Chemical Investigation or Power & Pop Culture.
Registration began Saturday and will continue through the beginning of classes in early June for most courses. Registration for a seconds session extend through mid-July 2011.
