Last evening as we turned on the TV, we heard that Guy Fieri of the Food Network was going to visit a diner in Santa Barbara. That caught our attention. So we suffered through what seemed to be interminable commercials and found out he was reviewing Norton's for their famous pastrami.
We had driven by it many times on our way to the FedEX store. So we watched Guy eating pastrami with local Santa Barbara celebriites and everyone was praising the pastrami...Could it be we wondered, that we have a deli that serves pastrami and rivals our favorite place in Beverly Hills?
So today, we went on a mission to answer the question . We opted for the location closest to our home, it is bascially a stand, unlike the original which is a deli cafe. This is Norton;s second location and it is situated next to the batting cages field, 3 blocks from the ocean. They have outdoor seating, and since it was overcast and cold, we opted to take it home.
It was everything we hoped for, and more. We think it rivals New York delis we have had the pleasure to eat at, as well as our Beverly Hills deli...

If you ever find yourself in our corner of the world, and you are a pastrami lover, be sure to visit Norton's. Ron said that if we were still living in LA it would be worth the drive.
Cheers, Ron & Alexandra

Santa Barbara has a zoo with 500 animals on 30 acres overlooking the ocean. As one drives down towards the ocean, past the bird reserve, you can catch a glimpse of our giraffe Audrey who arrived from Los Angeles in March of last year. Unbeknownst to the zoo keepers, she was five months pregnant,
Last month she gave birth to a healthy, 5 foot, 9 inches 106 pound giraffe son named Daniel. According to zoo director Nancy Mc Toldrige: "In addition to giraffe’s natural growth, it is likely a genetic defense strategy for animal mothers not to look pregnant to keep predators from singling them out."
Director of Animal Programs Sheri Horiszny said : "Nothing in her records indicated that Los Angeles Zoo keepers had ever seen their male showing interest in her or attempting to breed her."
Audrey is not interested in nursing Daniel, and is leaving the job to the zookeeper. Our resourceful zoo keepers found a goat in town who had given birth, and the owner was willing to share the milk with the baby giraffe, and Daniel is being also fed with cow milk.

Santa Barbara Neighborhoods - East Beach

Santa Barbara's East Beach Neighborhood consists of commercial, residential and light industrial properties with a few parks, the Zoo and the Funk Zone all mixed together to create a unique and eclectic place. East Beach's boundarys are State Street and Stearn's Wharf on the West, the Santa Barbara Zoo on the East, the 101 freeway to the North and the Pacific Ocean on the South. Most visitors to Santa Barbara are familiar with the beautiful palm tree lined stretch of East Beach with it's bicycle/ walking path, Fess Parker's Double Tree Resort across the street and of course the beach volleyball courts.
A relatively new development is happeningjust a block or two off the beach around Yanonali Street where the California Coastal Commission has designated these light industrial zoned blocks an arts area. Known as the Funk Zone, where a handful of formerly delapidated warehouses and old buildings have been rehabbed and transformed into wineries with tasting rooms to form Santa Barbara's urban wine trail. The Funk Zone, popular with weekend visitors and locals alike has, along with the development of some upscale condominiums, triggered a trendy urban transformation in this part of East Beach.
Residential opportunities in East Beach consist primarily of condominium developments with a few single family homes mixed in. A few notable condominium developments are El Escorial and East Beach Townhomes, which front East Beach and Villa Del Mar, located in the Funk Zone with beautiful Spanish architecture and two car garages. Residents of East Beach enjoy close proximity to the beach, downtown State Street, the Santa Barbara Zoo, walking paths and restaurants. If you are interested in an urban Santa Barbara beachy lifestyle you should check out East Beach.
