Historic Sonoma Country Home for Sale.
I remember those red and white Spreckels Sugar bags that we bought at the grocery store when I was a kid. Mom and Gram would use boxes of Spreckels powdered sugar to make frosting for yummy cakes. Back then I didn't know anything about the company or the family that built it. That changed after I took a look at a grand Sonoma country home listed on the Sonoma MLS. It was once the glam get-away of the late San Francisco socialite Alma Spreckels, widow of Adolf Spreckels, the son of the company founder Claus Spreckels. Intrigued---and a confessed sugar addict---I took my camera with me to shoot some pictures on broker tour.
The house was once part of a sprawling ranch called Sobre Vista that included 3000 acres on the western slopes of Sonoma Mountain. The Sonoma Golf Course...now the exclusive Sonoma Golf Club...was part of Alma Spreckels' Sonoma country estate. Sobre Vista was subdivided in the 1950's and it is one of Sonoma Valley's most coveted communities. The Sobre Vista Homeowners Association offers a short history of the property and Alma's life, including her passion for collecting sculptures by Rodin, has been well documented in the Encyclopedia of San Francisco. Her elegant Sobre Vista parties are legendary.
The home sits on about 3 acres and it's been listed for just under $3 Million. If you are a history buff who can afford it---Alma Spreckels' Sonoma Valley country home would be a delightful place to call your own. Contact me and I will make arrangements with the listing agent for a private tour.
