It's not always the places you go but the people you meet that make a vacation memorable.
Just found out about the newest group- Vacations on Active Rain and have a short story to add about our latest vacation to Calaveras County California.
We were there in June 2008 at the time the latest wildfires in California were breaking out. We drove to the town of Sutter, CA to visit Sutter's Ridge winery. It was already mid afternoon when we left Calaveras, and the drive was longer than we thought. The fires west of the area were causing a lot of pollution. When we finally arrived at the winery, we found it was closed! But the vineyards were so beautiful and picturesque that we walked around a bit anyway. Soon we were at a little house and a gentleman walked out, asking us if he could help us. As the owner, he told us that because of the smoke, he had let his workers go home early and closed up for the day. We told him our story of driving for an hour to get there and he graciously said he'd open the store up for us and let us taste some wine!
John Lanza Bree, a relative of Mario Lanza, then proceeded to spend an hour with us, regaling us with stories of his visit to Italy to find his roots and of the wine industry in the Sierra Nevada's of California.
He opened 4 or 5 bottles of wine for us to taste and brought out some wine brittle and crackers. John then opened a bottle of Rosato, their newest wine, which was very good.
Our Friends, Estelle and Bob, bought 2 bottles of the red wine and we bought 2 bottles- one white wine and one of the new Rosato. But John then informed me that he couldn't "sell" me the Rosato because it hadn't been certified yet by the Board of Equalization. However, he could auction off the bottle to me. My opening bid was $10, which was the winning bid! He put the label on it- with their new company name of Sierra Ridge, and I had the first bottle of Sierra Ridge Rosato wine sold!
My husband and I enjoyed the bottle one Saturday evening when we got home to Apex, North Carolina, with dinner and a lot of memories.
