Snow in Lake Tahoe, January 22, 2012 Tahoe City, California
The January snow drought is over! After weeks of thinking that we’d be getting our big winter storms and then getting nothing; the string of sunny, dry days came to an end.
On Thursday evening, we had a good snow storm, but that was short-lived, as Friday turned out to be a day of heavy rain. It’s hard to imagine just how hard it was raining up here in Tahoe, but our dogs (Irish Wolfhounds) wouldn’t go outside. I also wondered what would happen to our local ski resorts that had made snow. While it may have been snowing at the higher elevations, at the lower elevations, the rain had to be causing problems.
On Saturday morning, to my surprise, the rain had turned to snow. On the West Shore of Lake Tahoe we have more than 6 inches of snow and as of Sunday evening, it was still snowing!
Hopefully, this is not just another teaser storm, but rather the beginning of a number of winter storms that will hit our area and leave behind a lot of snow. This has to be good news for our local ski resorts and the greater Tahoe area.
For those that have been following my blog, you’ll remember my post from earlier this week, where I shared the experience I had at the Olympic Heritage Closing Ceremony where the Eagle Wings Dance Group performed their sacred snow dance, last Sunday, January, 15, 2012. Is this snow a result of their dance? The timing of the two events seems more than just a coincidence. I’d like to think the two are connected, so for now I’m a believer, and I’m enjoying the new snow that’s just outside my front door!
So get out those snow boots, skis, snowshoes, sleds, and anything else that you can use to play in the snow and make your plans to get to Lake Tahoe.
Don’t forget the 31st Annual Winter Carnival, in Lake Tahoe - SnowFest 2012 will start in just 42 days, so think snow!

Where to have breakfast on New Year’s Day in Tahoe City, California
The holiday parties are over, and it’s officially the beginning of a new year, but does the fun have to end? I don’t think so. I think having breakfast out on New Year Day is the way to kick-it off right. So where should you go if you’re in Tahoe City, California on January 1, 2012?
Everyone has their own local favorites, so here are a few of mine. For starters try the Fire Sign Café 530.583.0871, at 1785 West Lake Blvd., located in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Tahoe City, California, just two miles south of the “Y” in Tahoe City on Hwy 89 South.
This charming neighborhood café serves breakfast all day long, so if you’re in the mood for lunch, great, but if you got a late start, breakfast is always an option there.
My personal favorite is the Veggie Benedict. I substitute tomatoes for the potatoes, just to cut a few calories because I’ll be spending those saved calories on the single, giant buttermilk pancake that I’ll order too. Okay, I’m willing to share the pancake with the table, but they’re both so good - why choose? Yummy!
Another local favorite is Rosie’s Café 530.583.8504, located at 571 North Lake Blvd., which is right in the heart of downtown Tahoe City. They serve breakfast until 2:30 p.m. This is another option for brunch. One of my favorites here is the 2 x 2 x 2, which is 2 buttermilk pancakes, 2 eggs (I like mine over easy), and 2 slices of bacon. For those of you that know me, I’m still a vegetarian, so I’ll take the bacon on the side and then take them home to the puppies! Rosie’s does have a full bar, so anyone looking for a Bloody Mary, or other brunch beverages, look no farther than Rosie’s Cafe!
If you’re in a hurry, then stop by the Tahoe House Bakery & Gourmet 530.583.1377, located at 625 West Lake Blvd, about ¾ of a mile from the “Y” in Tahoe City on Hwy 89 South. The Tahoe House is known for their gourmet coffees and pastries, but they also have a great egg, cheese, veggie, or ham croissants, and breakfast burritos.
My personal favorite is the chocolate croissant, but you’ll have to get their fairly early for that one. It’s popular and goes quickly. Don’t forget they also have wireless internet, so it’s a great place to sit and send out your email messages.
Enjoy these great options for having breakfast here in Tahoe City, California.
Where ever your travels may take you on the first day of January, may your trip be safe. Here’s wishing you a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year!
Happy New Year!
