I went to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce last Friday to pick up a couple new street maps of Whittier. I usually keep a copy in my car and a copy in the portfolio that I carry with me, and the old ones I have are starting to fall apart.
I was delighted that they had reduced the price of the map from $2.50 to $2.00; and, since the Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization, they don't charge sales tax. So I felt like I got a great deal on my two new maps of Whittier.
Today was the first time I opened the map to take a look at it. I was greatly disappointed to discover that this new map of Whittier only includes the incorporated City of Whittier, and it does not include the unincorporated areas of South Whittier and West Whittier / Los Nietos.
The old maps were one of the most useful tools I have had in my business. They allowed me to show clients different areas in both incorporated and unincorporated areas of Whittier. I also used them almost daily when scouting neighborhoods or going from one area to another.
Los Angeles County does provide an online map of South Whittier and West Whittier, but it really does not help someone who needs a traditional folded map for the car or home. Printing it out on an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper really does not help much.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, South Whittier had a population of 55,193. How many people does it take to get on the map?
