Over the River Project

There has been great debate and publicity surrounding the “Over The River” project. The world famous Cristo is planning on draping the Arkansas River with approx 6 miles of fabric. The debates include things like environmental concerns, traffic, employment, wildlife, local established business, new business and general bother to the city.

Endorsements in favor of the Cristo “Over the River” project are coming in but the silence of those not endorsing the project is just about as loud. If the project is as successful as planners hope there will be approx 400,000 to 500,000 visitors to the Canon City and Royal Gorge area in a short two week period of time.

My opinion as a local resident fluctuates between approval and disapproval although nobody actually asked my opinion. My biggest concerns are....

Reasons for Seniors to Live In Canon City

1. Canon City wants you!
2. Climate It’s hard to argue with 300+ days of sunshine!
3. Altitude/scenery You can live in a Mountain type atmosphere without living above 6000 feet.
4. Variety of activities Bike, Hike, Raft. This isn’t your grandparents retirement
5. Small town atmosphere with most needs met Canon City has shopping, doctors, a hospital, entertainment, restaurants and more.
6. Close proximity to larger cities and airports Colorado Springs and Pueblo are more or less than 45 minutes away
7. Stable economic base There are jobs here, steady stable employment supports the area
8. Family close by The number #1 reason I hear that people want to move to Canon City. The kids, grand kids and other family members are in Colorado Springs or Denver. Close but not to close
9. Good hospital St. Thomas More
10. Variety of Senior Services available The Golden Age Center and Nursing Care if necessary
11. Less taxes on some Seniors pensions/income Check with a professional on this one!
