Forbes Park in Costilla County Colorado
Today I received my property owners newsletter from the Forbes Park Association via email. My husband and I have owned land in Forbes Park Colorado now for about 5 years and so I thought I would let you know a little about it and our plans for our lot. I also looked here on Active Rain and found there were no posts for Forbes Park so here we go.
Forbes Park is a private park, located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Costilla County Colorado. Forbes, Inc. developed the area and began selling lots in 1977. About five years later the lots were sold out. There are 3,346 lots; they range in size from 1 to 14 acres. The Park encompasses approximately 13,046 acres. Approximately 8,000 acres are comprised of owned lots; the rest of the acreage is Common Land.
Our lot is a 2 acre lot on Korlkoff Road and is a heavily wooded site with Blue Spruce and Aspen trees. The reason we bought the lot is to build a second home there, hopefully in the next 10 years, but we did not want anything that would need grass to be cut. Colorado is my second favorite state and so when the lot came up for sale it seemed only logical to buy. If you like snow like I do this area has an elevation of 8,800 to 10,000 feet. From end to end the park is about 10 miles and our lot is hiding in the middle. Last year the area had 300 inches of snow! That sounds like a very good reason to buy a snow mobile, don't you think?
Located about 5 miles in from the gate entrance our lot is located in a forest area of the park. There are also open areas as you can see above and lakes and streams run throughout the park. If you like wildlife Forbes Park is full of animals and birds. You'll never be short of subjects for photos and now fall is here and the leaves are turning Forbes Park has beautiful colors to see.
My dream is to build a home large enough for family holidays especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas. From one door to another it is about 960 miles. We could fly into Denver and hire a car but it's more likely we would drive and make the road trips part of the vacations. I look forward to announcing here one day that construction work has commenced. In the meantime here are some more photos of the area.
This is the home of one of our Forbes Park neighbors, I keep it in my thoughts as a reminder of what our future holds.
