There was an interesting article in the latest issue of 5280 Magazine about a home in Cherry Point of Southeast Denver. This is the same neighborhood that I live in. The article features a family that renovated their home to be "kid friendly" by making everything washable. The homeowner is an Interior Designer and owner of M Street interior design. The article has great pictures of this Cherry Point home and is worth checking out.
Some of the things she recommends is having slip covered couches, paint that is pearl finish rather than eggshell, and having accessories that are kid oriented and not easily broken. Its nice to see how great this house looks after the renovation, and she didn't use very expensive materials. I also love the dark wood flooring which is the stain color we used in our house as well. My wife and I love Cherry Point and we are seeing a lot of young families moving into the neighborhood.

My son is a cub scout and this year they had a den meeting about "community involvement' and the den leader did a great job talking about how we all reap the benefits of those that volunteer in the community. I looked around the room at some of the parents and noticed that each of them had something they volunteered for to help make their community a better place. On the car ride home I talked to my son about why its important to volunteer and build a sense of community pride.
One of my volunteer roles in the community is for my neighborhood homeowners association in Cherry Point. I am a second term treasurer and secretary. These roles are time consuming but have allowed me to get to know the neighbors and help promote the Cherry Point neighborhood. Promoting Cherry Point was my campaign platform although I had no opponent in the bi-annual election.
Anyway, those of us on the board also help organize the annual picnic. Our president Steve Wise did a great job of this after taking the lead from one of our directors - Nyssa Zabel. Nyssa was the former organizer of the picnic and couldn't really find anyone else to help organize it, so Steve Wise and his wife did. My main job was the check-in table where we collect dues and hand out name tags. Everyone was in good spirits that day. We had burgers and cokes, with face painters and balloon artists for the kids.
In the end we got enough volunteers to pull off a great picnic. It takes a little asking but we really do have a great community in Cherry Point. The people that live here are affluent and are used to volunteering for things. For me it keeps me balanced. I guess if you're reading this, my question is 'are you balanced?' Do you have a portion of your life to dedicate to your community? Chances are you already reap the benefits of someone who does.

Hi Folks,
Here is another article I have written for the Cherry Point newsletter in Denver, CO. Cherry Point is a great neighborhood with large lots and mostly ranch style homes. It has little to no distressed sales. Simply a great family neighborhood.
Green Improvements to Your Cherry Point Home
Most people want to ride the green wave but are a little guarded with their pocket book these days. Naturally, there is more interest in low cost, but high impact green improvements. The best way to find that what those things are is to have an energy audit done on your home. Xcel Energy and other companies such as Lightly Treading have energy audit services. They can be pretty affordable and will result in a nice report that tells you what to do to make your home more energy efficient.
Usually the results of a home energy audit will tell you to improve upon your caulking around windows, sealing areas around doors, installing programmable thermostats, and putting in compact fluorescent light bulb. These are the things that aren't very expensive, or glamorous, but the payback can occur within two years if not much sooner.
If you're willing to spend more money there are several other things that the typical Cherry Point home could use in the areas of insulation, doors/windows, and boilers. Major improvements have occurred in the insulation materials and many Cherry Point homes don't have enough insulation in attic and around ceiling lights. There are up to $1,500 in tax credits available for installing windows and doors, among other things. Just check out www.energystar.gov and you will see the requirements. Also, many Cherry Point homes have boilers in need of replacement which are now available at 95% efficiency. Your contractor may even recommend installing a combination Hot Water Heater and Boiler that work together and are now available for even more efficiency.
When it comes to flooring consider carpets and tile that are made of recyclable materials and wood flooring that is from sustainable forests. There really are plenty of options in this area. If you have questions feel free to contact me. I have done a lot of what's mentioned in this article, and I'm a certified EcoBroker. Thank you - Todd Groth 720.203.9624.
