Fun, Music, and World Class Chili at Rock Creek's Chili Fest in Superior, Colorado

Fun, Music, and World Class Chili at Rock Creek's Chili Fest in Superior, Colorado.

This year's Chili Fest (which was the 10th annual) more than made up for the cold, rainy day we had at last year's competition. For the town of Superior, Colorado it was a welcomed distraction. A time of remembering. A time of moving forward. A time to be grateful that things didn't turn out worst (when you consider that parts of the city Boulder had been on evacuation alert just a couple of days ago).

The fires in Four Mile Canyon are 70% contained (as of last night). We also all remember and acknowledge the date of 9/11 and everything it now means. As Hazel Miller (the musical headliner) mentioned just before she started to sing, we need to remember, but we can't let the threat of terrorism control us (I paraphrase).

Community Park in Rock Creek was very festive with activities for the kids, a chance for neighbors to get together, local vendors, music for all, and, yes of course, some great chili. Many different flavorful green chili varieties. An entire spectrum of flavor in the red chili categories. As flavorful or as spicy as you would want.

In addition to the local restaurants also came out to compete. Once again the Rock Mountain Fire Department was voted best in this category. If those guys ever gave up their day job (which I hope they wouldn't – their service to the community is invaluable), they could probably make a go at a successful restaurant.

Earlier in the afternoon the Delta Sonics serenaded the crowd with some awesome foot-tapping blues. Later in the afternoon the Hazel Miller band took the stage and mesmerized the audience with their blend blues, jazz, pop, and gospel. Living in this area I find that I need my “Hazel fix” at least monthly. Fortunately for me Hazel is very accessible and makes it easy to enjoy a great night out.

All proceeds from ticket and beer sales at this year's Chili Fest went towards supporting the Boulder County Incident Management Team.

A big thanks to all of the event volunteers, competitors, the bands, the Town of Superior, and the Rock Creek Community. I'm still smiling from the after-effects of a fun afternoon (my tummy was pretty happy, too!).

A Local Hospital is Another Added Value to the Rock Creek Community

A Local Hospital is Another Added Value to the Rock Creek Community.

Watching the real estate cycle over the past few years has been an enlightening experience. Why have some communities lost substantial value in homes whereas another community just a few miles away has been able to maintain its value?

One thing I realized recently is the added value that local hospitals bring to communities. A local hospital gives homeowners a level of assurance that should the need arise, professional care is available nearby.

You might wonder what would make think about a local hospital. Well as the father of two boys, my wife and I are not strangers to emergency rooms. Recently two experiences made me grateful for having close access to a top notch medical facility, namely Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville, Colorado. And even though Avista is in Louisville, it's just across the highway from the town of Superior and the Rock Creek community.

The first event was somewhat expected. My older son had dislocated his shoulder last November and we were forewarned that if a second dislocation occurred, surgery would be required. This happened in early August, and we were thankful for the quick ride to get help. Shoulder was relocated and surgery scheduled for the following week. My son has been recuperating very well.

A week after my son's surgery, my younger son and I were enjoying an awesome mountain bike ride in Marshall Mesa, just west of Superior. Toward the end of the ride, as I was chasing after my fit, 18 year old son, my front tire slid off of the single track path and into a bush. The indisputable laws of physics took effect. The bike stopped instantly, the rider (yours truly) attempted to fly, but alas the laws of gravity were also in effect. I flipped over the handlebars landing on my shoulder, head, elbow into ribs and finally coming to rest on my side. We were about a half-mile from an area where we could be picked up off of a road, and my wife came to the rescue.

Once again, I was extremely grateful for a short ride to the emergency room. X-rays were taken and sure enough my collar bone was broken.

Now because of my other sons shoulder dislocation we now had an orthopedic surgeon that we liked. We made an appointment to meet with doctor again. It's almost inevitable to have a little bit of humor manifest from this type of situation. When the doctor came into the room he was surprised to see that his patient was me, and I had to explain to him that we had such a great experience with him the week before that well, I just had to come back and do it again. The following day, the doctor reconstructed my collar bone.

Father and son continue to recover and get stronger daily. A huge thank you to our doctor and the great staff at Avista Adventist Hospital. You can't make this stuff up!

10th Annual Chili Fest returns to Rock Creek in Superior, Colorado.

The fall is such a great time of year. The dog days of August give way to cooler days. The Aspens start to prepare for our local foilage show. I do miss that the summer music shows have come to an end. But I always look forward to our Annual Chili Fest in Community Park in Rock Creek.

Superior Colorado Takes Lead On Solar Energy At Waste Water Treatment Plan

Superior Colorado takes lead on solar energy at waste water treatment plan.

Solar Energy in Superior Colorado

The town of Superior, Colorado made a goal in 2008 to make Superior an energy self-sufficient community within 10 years. Early projects included installing photovoltaic systems on 7 town of Superior facilities.

This week, on August 11th, another green project was announced. The town of Superior's waste water treatment facility will be utilizing solar energy to power the treatment facility. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2010. It will benefit the town of Superior and the Rock Creek community by producing an expected 280,000 kilowatt-hours of energy per year. That's approximately equal to 8 percent of the town's energy usage.

In addition to helping the local environment, this translates into a yearly savings of $14,000 on energy bills. And another added bonus for the town of Superior is that it will receive $22,800 from Xcel Energy's SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Credits) program. The project is expected to be cash-flow from the day it starts generating power.

Hats off to Superior's leadership for kicking off this initiative!
