Insurance and the Tornado, Windsor, Colorado

06-02-08
Kendra Adams
Kendra Adams: Real Estate Agent in Windsor, CO

This weekend I was able to visit with several of my homeowners that lost their homes in the tornado and how things were going for them. Now keep in mind these people lost about everything and my guess is that they are still in some shock. However the news is uplifting. They are all pleased with the way they are being serviced by their insurance. They have all been relocated or at least have found a place. They have money in their pockets and new beds, bedding, some clothing and food. They are putting things together piece by piece.

One young lady told me she had to get rid of all her children's toys. The insurance said that the amount of debris and flying insulations, asbestos and etc made the items unsafe. The same was true for her towels, clothing, furniture and anything that was left open. Since in her case they lost a complete story to their home that was virtually everything. For now they are borrowing some furniture and are making due. They will continue to get replacement money as they go through the process. I did ask about a time frame and she told me for now there was none. They plan on buying furniture once their home is repaired.

Another couple shared that they have to do very little. The insurance company is going through their items for them. Letting them know what is salvageable and what is not. They are packing up what they can keep and delivering it to them. He and his wife both had very specific book collections which were both lost and are irreplaceable however, the family china hutch can be repaired. Again, they have what they need and are doing well. They will take up their hobby of collecting books again and start a new adventure. Isn't human spirit great!

Homes Clean Up After Windsor Colorado Tornado

05-30-08

The clean up here has been inspiring and amazing. What a place to call home! My daughter Hannah and I went out the other day and just started to clean where needed, the next thing we knew we were joined by other volunteers. It was an amazing experience. We over filled a 20 yard dumpster in 30 minutes! A great experience. Once it was full we all walked to another area and started again.

As to the lives of the victims is still stressful. There is need for men's and children clothing (Women always seem to have clothing to share). Diapers, formula, toys and the like are still needed as well. The biggest task in this area is getting the farmers back in the fields. Before this can happen the fields need to be walked shoulder to shoulder and the debris picked up. Many groups are going out daily to get this done.

Insurance and FEMA papers are in the works as well. So far those affected seem to be happy with the process. They are securing rentals (now in shortage) and gathering the pieces together. Many have to wait to see what kind of damage was done to the frame of the home. From what I am understanding many homes will be taken to 2 X 4 stage and evaluated by a structural engineer. Once that report is received they will determine the next step.

Windsor Tornado Event Brings the Best out of Community

Kathy Brown Sells Northern Colorado: Real Estate Agent in Johnstown, CO

The tragic events of 5/22 in the quaint town of Windsor, Colorado left countless familes without a home, without power, but not without hope. Volunteers from within the local community, as well as from neighboring communities were out in full force to assist those familes left victimized by this terrible storm. The sense of community is so awesome, as large groups gathered as teams and went from home to home to clear yards and streets of the piles of debris left behind. There are volunteers providing food services, free daycare and handling donations to help in this time of need. The sense of a caring community is overwhelming and heartfelt. It's so nice to know that people really do care, and when others' lives come to a hault, there is hope for a new beginning. God Bless to all involved in the rebuilding of the Windsor community!
