The Thimble Islands are a chain of 100-365 small islands that lie off the shore of the affluent community of Stony Creek in Branford Connecticut. They are made up of Stony Creek pink granite rocks, ledges and outcroppings ranging in size from small rocks to 17 acres full of local tradition and a wealth of history.
The Thimble Islands were first discovered by Adrian Block in 1614 who also discovered Block Island and were a favorite spot of the Mattabeseck Indians as a summer camping ground. During the 18th century in 1716 the colonists acquired land grants of the islands. Because Branford was known as a farming community, there was little value found in the islands except as a source of seaweed which was used as a fertilizer and pasture for sheep during the summer on the larger islands.
The islands and drew lobstermen and commercial fishermen to the area who found a very profitable harvest in the waters. During the 19th century oyster farming thrived and produced a great source of wealth and by 1870 the area was booming with hotels, boarding houses and the building of summer cottages on the islands and on the shore.
Many changes have come to the islands since World War I. The hotels are gone and you'll see more water boats and water skiers on the waters now and fewer sailboats and rowing races. Many of the islands have been bought and sold over the years but there are still many families who from generation to generation continue to come back to the islands year after year.
The Thimble Islands are included in the Stony Creek-Thimble Islands Hisotric District and listed in 1988 as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

I had the pleasure of being invited out to lunch today by a friend of mine Samatha Liacos who is a home mortgage consultant with Wells Fargo and a fellow Active Rain member who I would love to see become a more active blogger.
Our lunch date was at Mango'sBar & Grille which is located in the Branford Town Center on Main Street between Ben and Jerrys and Trailblazers.

I have been to Mango's numerous times for their Happy Hour from 5-7 pm Wednesday through Friday with other agents from my office but this was the first time I had the opportunity to visit there for lunch.
We were seated immediately in a nice booth in the dining room and were greeted by our wonderful waitress Lorraine who took our drink orders and let us know what lunch specials were available for the day.

The cuisine at Mango's is a mix of traditional American with influences from the islands known as "Branforribean" cuisine. Every dish is made to order and today was no exception with Chef Michael Deponte Jr. in the kitchen preparing our selections from the luncheon menu.
Mango's brings a piece of the Caribbean to you with it's sumptious selection of appetizers, salads, wraps, seafood, meat, pork, chicken, pasta, pizza and sides.
My choice was Mango Madness a salad of citrus fruit, fresh mangos with macadamia nuts, feta cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, tossed with field greens and topped with a key lime vinaigerette.

Samantha chose Fish Taco a wrap of fresh fish, tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh greens and key lime remoulade.

With a side of onion rings, a diet coke with lemon for me and an iced tea for Samantha in our cool blue Liquid Aloha glasses, our meal was complete.

Co-owners Nick Colavolpe, Michael Deponte, and Lenny Carbonera had worked together at Sam's Dockside Restaurant and when it was sold decied to open up the restaurant that they had dreamed of with a Caribbean flair in the heart of Branford. The wonderful atmosphere and impeccable service has made Mango's one of the best hot spots to visit along the shoreline area.

Mango's recently celebrated its three year anniversary and has been so successful its owners have opened a new restaurant in Branford down at Indian Neck with a New England flair speciaizing in seafood called The Blue Cottage.
As someone who is a seafood lover, I promised Michael that I would put it on the top of my list and check out The Blue Cottage. You can be sure I'll be writing a post after my visit there in the very near future.
