Black Rock Real Estate Update - November 2011

Gail Robinson, REALTOR, e-PRO Fairfield County, CT: Real Estate Agent in Fairfield, CT

The first train should leave the platform at the new Fairfield Metro Station on Monday, December 5. This has been a long time coming! There is no word yet on when regular service will begin or details on when the 1,440 parking space permits will be issued. Also up in the air is whether there will be Express Service to Grand Central from this new stop.

From a real estate perspective, this is good news as a new stop on a train line tends to increase property values within a one mile radius of the train station by 14-18% according to studies. These are unusual times, so it remains to be seen what kind of impact the train station will actually have on property values, but listing agents are reporting an increase in showings of Black Rock properties and buyer agents are noticing more interest in Black Rock properties. You can see the increase in activity by scrolling down and looking at my own listings which are under deposit or under contract.

Black Rock CT Library: New England's Other Witch Hunt

Black Rock Branch

New England Other Witchhunt New England’s Other Witch-Hunt: The Hartford Witch-hunt of the 1660s and Changing Patterns in Witchcraft Prosecution.

Lecture by Doctor Walter Woodward: professor at the UConn Department of History and Connecticut’s State Historian.

Co-sponsored by the Bridgeport Digital Humanities Initiative and the Black Rock Branch Library.

Everyone knows about the witch hunt at Salem in 1692. But few people know that in the years before Salem, Connecticut was New England’s fiercest witch prosecutor. The first person hanged for witchcraft in New England came from Windsor, and every single person indicted for witchcraft in Connecticut in its early years was convicted and hanged.

.Walt Woodward brings this extraordinary, but nearly forgotten story to life, in a lecture that begins with the Protestant Reformation and traces its history all the way through the Hartford Witch hunt of the 1660′s, a nightmare of trials and executions that preceded Salem by a generation.

Some of those who ran the Hartford witch trials also came to Bridgeport. There was a trial and execution in what is today Fairfield Avenue in the Black Rock section of the city.

The lecture starts at 7pm for one hour and there will be a brief Q & A afterwards.

Refreshments will be served.

TheophilSave and Burn - A documentary by Julian Samuel

(A part of the Library Science/Artspace statewide Film Festival and New Haven exhibition in collaboration with the Connecticut Library Consortium.)

Click here for Film Festival and Exhibit info.

Save and Burn deepens our understanding of the history of civilization through the phenomenon of the library. From ancient China, India, Islam, and the Graeco Roman world, we see how the library radiated knowledge and spiritual values, and facilitated the cross fertilization of ideas from one culture to another.
Save and Burn puts the institution of the library within a startling political context. Generally considered a preserver of culture, the documentary points out how libraries are subject to the ideologies of their time and place and not above them, as may have been assumed.
The film assays the commercialization of libraries, the irresponsible weeding and closing of libraries, the excesses of copyright law, but most of all, the fact that the West has not recognized the Orient for much of its cultural heritage..

The film is packed with provocative ideas. Historically, libraries have been used to promote or inhibit democratic debate, with a nod to the Patriot Act. The filmmaker combines exquisite footage of the Alexandrian Library, the Library of Trinity College, Dublin, and Bromley House in Nottingham. Interviews include Tom Twiss, Government Information Librarian, University of Pittsburgh, who describes the destruction of Palestinian libraries by Israeli soldiers, as well as the fate of Iraqi libraries during the “liberation.”

Julian Samuel is a Montreal-based film-maker and writer. Earlier work examined the contemporary relationship between the West, the Middle East and Asia. His most recent documentaries include The Library in Crises (2002), Save and Burn (2004) and Atheism (2006). His published writings are: Lone Ranger in Pakistan, The Raft of the Medusa; Into the European Mirror (transcripts and commentaries); and his first novel, Passage to Lahore.
