budgetBridgeport – City Budgets and Balance Sheets: 101

(a view from the “cheap seats” as a taxpayer….)

Civic leaders often use words like “open, accountable, transparent” (O.A.T.) to characterize their activities and processes. However, when you follow the money processes (according to the Charter, City ordinances, or best practices in ‘top-rated’ communities) that are frequently hidden from view, you may question whether O.A.T.s is an accurate description in Bridgeport.

This is a one hour primer for curious taxpayers and voters who believe in fiscal “checks and balance”, timely and informed oversight and competent watchdogs over City fiscal processes and purchases. Presenters attended the 2011 City Budget and Appropriation hearings and believe that added public knowledge of and participation in the money process (aside from paying property taxes) can reduce waste and inefficiency, focus dollars on priorities, and develop a healthy community dialogue.

Time for Q & A.

John Marshall Lee and Andrew Fardy will be the presenters.

walking down your blood sugarGet Fit Bridgeport – “Walking Down Your Blood Sugar”

The Black Rock Branch announces a physical fitness series using exercise DVD’s, that are available at the library. They are simple to use and appropriate for those who have not exercised regularly, or who need a gentler way of exercising, yet want results.

The first program is entitled “Walking Down Your Blood Sugar” from the Leslie Sansone ‘Walk at Home’ DVD Series. It includes an educational ‘Talk’ offering a doctor’s expert advice on the importance of fitness walking while managing diabetes

The format will be 15 minute welcome and education, 30 minute walking with the video, 15 minute handout /repeat education and close.

This program is free but registration required. Please call 203 337-9676 to reserve your spot. As with any exercise program, check with your doctor if you have any known health issues.
“Get Fit Bridgeport” will also include books and articles for education in nutrition incorporating those available at the library and on the internet. This will hopefully encourage people to use the Library resources to educate themselves about healthy lifestyle changes to manage and even possibly prevent some illnesses.
“The Get Fit Bridgeport” program will be conducted by RHONDA BIVINS who has studied wellness for over 25 years, incorporating spirit, soul, and body and the relationship each has to health. She enjoys teaching others what she has learned through her experiences and brings that knowledge in a fun and easy to understand way.
She looks forward to meeting you at the Black Rock Branch of the Bridgeport Public Library for the indoor fitness series “Get Fit Bridgeport” beginning November 7th, 2011 at 12:00 PM.

Bridgeport Public Library - Meet the Author: High Voltage

Gail Robinson, REALTOR, e-PRO Fairfield County, CT: Real Estate Agent in Fairfield, CT

Today in Bridgeport:
Join Jim Motavalli for a discussion of his fascinating new book, High Voltage

When: 2:00 PM on Saturday November 19th, 2011
Where: Bridgeport Public Library – Fine Arts room
925 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT 06604

Electric automobiles in Connecticut are not a new phenomena. Electric cars were built as early as 1897 in Fairfield County. This riveting book by Jim Motavalli explores the current race to market the electric car.

The auto industry of 2020 is likely to be very different from the field of troubled auto giants we see today. Just as in the 1980s it was unimaginable that the home computer would become as common and easy to use as a toaster, so the days of electric cars and plug-in charging stations seem like something still far off in the future.

But the combination of technological breakthroughs and charging networks driven by global warming and peak oil makes it clear that revolutionary change in the auto industry is happening right now.

In High Voltage, Jim Motavalli documents the evolution from the internal combustion engine to electric power, catching the industry in a period of profound change. Personality-driven and dramatic, the book chronicles the race to dominate the market, focusing on big players like Tesla and Fisker, as well as a tiny start-up and one female-led battery supplier. Motavalli charts the changes to come in the industry— a future where we will live on a smart grid, our cars “fueling,” i.e. charging, while we shop or sleep. But the ramifications for the larger picture that Motavalli explores will be massive—altering foreign policy, reducing trade deficits, and perhaps even ending global warming.

JIM MOTAVALLI is the author of Forward Drive, Naked in the Woods and several other books. He blogs on clean cars for the New York Times, CBS, and NPR’s Car Talk, among others. He lives in Fairfield, Connecticut.
When: 2:00 PM Saturday November 19th, 2011
