Beware: Active Rain Day 13 A Blade of Grass in the Cement

9/11 was a horrible day that most of us will never forget. It's hard to believe that anything good happened on that day. Year after year that particular date brings pain and bad memories to alot of people. It has been a very solemn day with numerous memorials so that we never forget and let our guard down again. It's odd that that day had usually been a rather happy day for me until the terrorist attacks as it is my birthday. Somehow it hasn't seemed right to celebrate when so many other people are feeling such pain. Not that it's ever a happy day anyway as we tend to get a little older and might prefer to skip a few and slow down time if we could.

This year was pretty typical for me. No great fanfare and a year older to boot. I had a nice lunch with my wife and one of my daughters(which is always special)but my daughter had to get back to her college studies so we said our goodbyes and off she went.

Our neice had a baby girl the previous day so we decided to drive an hour or so to see the new arrival. We drove up with the radio on listening to 9/11 programs. One station had a continuos role call of the victims names and sometimes a few words from a wife or son or daughter that was truly heart breaking. As I said 9/11 can be a very painful day.

We parked the car at the hospital and walked inside, picked up our visitor pass and headed up to our neice's room. We opened that door and seeing mom with the new baby we immediately forgot about everything else. There was no thought of 9/11 or getting older or anything other than the joy of seeing our neice with her new daughter. When you witness the love that a new Mom has for her child you realize that no matter how tragic a day it is there are miracles happening if we just take time to look. I don't want to make light of the tragedy of 9/11 but I also don't want to miss the blade of grass in the cement.
