The Connecticut Wine Trail: Eleventh Stop
Maugle Sierra Vineyards only has 11 acres of producing vines, but just because they're a small winery doesn't mean their wines don't have big flavor. Established in 2002 by Paul and Betty Maugle, Maugle Sierra is dedicated to producing premium wines from Connecticut grapes, including St. Croix, Traminette and Cayuga, and they're adding more each year.
Tucked away in southeastern Connecticut in the town of Ledyard, the winery is a must see on the Connecticut Wine Trail. They're situated just 5 minutes from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, 10 minutes from Mohegan Sun Casino, and also 10 minutes from Mystic Seaport. On this day, we were on our second day at Foxwoods Resort (on them,of course!) and also our second day of wine tastings, and Maugle Sierra was first up on the list.
Our host was Betty Maugle and the first of the six wines she presented was the 1740 Ledyard House White. It's mostly Chardonnay with a touch of golden Vidal, cold fermented in stainless steel, and because it never touches any oak as most Chards do, it's referred to as a "naked" Chardonnay. Delicate aromas of apricots and pears greet your nose and the finish is crisp and clean. Next up was the 1740 Ledyard House Rosé, a St. Croix-based wine that is also cold fermented and mixed with a little White Merlot. The result is a smooth, dry wine with delicate fruit flavors and bouquet.
The next wine was the Ledyard Sunset White, made from Vidal grapes and exhibiting a creamy texture and subtle sweetness, and a nice finish full of apricots and citrus fruit. It's a great wine and turned out to be our second favorite here. We were next served the 1740 Ledyard House Red, made from estate-grown St. Croix grapes and blended with a little Merlot which gives it a nice fruity flavor. Blackberry, plum and black currant flavors were very evident in this nice wine.
Moving along, we tasted the Ledyard Sunset Red, a blend of estate-grown St. Croix and Cabernet Franc grapes, combining the peppery, spicy flavor of the Cab Franc with the fuller currant and dark berry flavors of the St. Croix. The finish was smooth and very persistent on the palate. Lastly we were treated to a taste of the St. Croix, 100% made from the estate grown grapes of that name. I say "treated" to a taste because it was a delight on the nose and in the mouth, delivering full, intense flavors from aging in American oak, with notes of blackberry, plum and currant that were just delicious. Oddly enough, this wine was not fully dry, but semi-dry, which surprised us but pleased us, as we're not big dry wine drinkers. But this wine made a big enough impression on us to earn our highest scores of the day, and accordingly we bought a bottle to take home.
Maugle Sierra Vineyards is located at 825 Colonel Ledyard Highway in Ledyard, CT. They are open year round on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 5 PM, and now through November they will be open on Thursday from Noon to 6 PM and on Friday from Noon to 8 PM. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit with Betty Maugle and highly recommend a stop here if you should be visiting the casinos or Mystic Village.

Today is the first day of the new smoking tax. Before today, Connecticut taxed cigarettes at the rate of $2 per pack. As of today that is now $3 per pack - a whopping 50% increase!
Since I have never smoked, the tax itself does not affect me but I recognize that fact that it is getting a bit excessive! I hope more people think it's too expensive and decide to quit. In the long run, if more people quit, it should lower the states long term medical costs.
:)

An email recently landed in my inbox with the subject line " Ledyard Police is now following you on Twitter." I admit it was a bit disconcerting. Actually, I freaked out temporarily when I realized I was one of only 3 people being followed. I ran into "Ledyard Police" a few nights later. I'm a member of the Ledyard Town Council and we were discussing the police budget. (Honestly, I don't make this stuff up.) As it turns out "Ledyard Police" was following me for all the right reasons. It seems that police departments in the area are considering Twitter as another resource to notify residents in case of emergencies.
I joined Twitter in 2007. Back then it was intimate, like the bar where everyone knew your name. Since then Twitter has exploded. When someone follows me, I usually oblige and follow back. As a result, it is often hard to find the good stuff among the noise of people I don't really know. Fortunately, applications like Tweetdeck allow me to create groups and weed out those that don't contribute to my Twitter objectives.
Like "Ledyard Police", each user has his own reason for following and being followed on Twitter. I was attracted to Twitter because of the 140 character limit. I seldom read blog posts beyond a few paragraphs. I don't need the War and Peace version of an opinion on short sales. I'm an Aries and those born under that sign are described as "Lose interest quickly - easily bored." Yep, that describes me.
Whether I'm speaking as a Town Councilor, writing a blog post or debating politics, I've always been a woman of few words, many of them an attempt to be witty. "Brevity is the soul of wit" is my mantra. I doubt I could ever write a book. I'm sure I would bore myself before the final chapter.
I don't have any expectations from Twitter as far as putting commission dollars in my pocket. For me Twitter is more of a resource for making industry connections, following breaking news and events, and picking up tips on the latest and greatest technology. I'd give it a "5 thumbs up" for meeting those expectations.
