This series started as a way to shine a brighter light on local merchants and businesses who offer unusual and thoughtful options for holiday gift-giving.
Three things became quickly apparent: First-we give gifts year-round, for different occasions. Two-sometimes we are the most deserving gift candidates we know. Third (channeling Sally Field now) you really, really liked it!
So now, going forward, this is a year-round, on-going series. Valentines Day is coming...so are birthdays, anniversaries, baby and bridal showers, etc. Please make this a favorite, and consider coming here first for you gift-giving inspiration.
For a number of years, I have been drawn to what I THOUGHT yoga was about, but got intimidated by all there was to KNOW: Intense yoga, hot yoga, gentle yoga? And oh yes, all the media images of slender flexible lovelies in spandex....the only constant was that I would read stories about real-life devotees in their 60s, 70s and beyond who were calm and happy, healthy and flexible. And the older I've gotten, the more I've wanted THAT to be MY future.
This is not to educate anyone on the specifics of yoga...it's about how that even early on, it's come to work in the real life of an unathletic, non-graceful, kind of fearful and and semi-lumpy person (me), and that why a gift certificate for some introductory lessons could be the best gift you'd ever give.
Through a business organization I came to know Michele Weiss professionally. Travel is her business, but yoga is her passion. A casual conversation some months earlier led to an email about classes she was teaching, which then found me in a cozy studio in Stamford on a Saturday morning about 6 weeks ago.
Yoga Space Stamford is nestled in the 2nd floor of the LAA (Loft Artists Association) Building on Canal Street, just down from Fairway, off exit 8 of 95. Love the creative feeling of the building, and the clean, simple feeling of the studio.
Owner Silvana Stein opened Yoga Space Stamford in 2008. First a practicioner for nearly 30 years, then a certified instructor, she has taught in lower Fairfield county since 1993, she is one of those afore-mentioned devotees with an amazing story of healing.
There is a very old saying (proverb?) 'when the student is ready, the teacher will appear'. That has proven to be the case in other profound times in my life, and I am seeing that here, too.
As I contemplate writing this, it occurs to me how un-intellectual this is. Thinking, talking, reading about it will not help you understand...for me, so far, it's been about just showing up, listening and doing...just following instructions.
lynegar yoga is what Silvana, and Michele, and the other instructors practice, this link can tell you more about it. Six weeks in, I can tell you first I am sore the day after...but it's a good sore. I never was concious before of how many different body parts there were that I had such control over. But I am also thinking better, and carrying myself gently, straighter. I am taller and calmer, and deep, settling breaths just come, involuntarily. It's wild.
Yoga Space Stamford has a full schedule of classes for those of all abilities, and some very attractive deals if you wanted to try a few without any monster commitment. If you are ready, and lucky enough to live in the Stamford area( it's 20 minutes for me, coming from White Plains), check out the site and call Silvana for any questions. If you are out of the area, research it a bit, and look for your own local haven. Treat yourself, you'll be glad you did.

Looking for a family friendly community where children ride bikes, sleigh ride in the yards, and the residents are friendly? Consider Shippan Point.
A lovely waterfront community, Shippan is full of excitement and activities. It's a home to West Beach which is open to the public and several private beaches which are used by residents with deeded rights. The area off of Shippan Avenue is called Shippan Point, this is a peninsula which juts out into Long Island Sound and occasionally on a clear day offers a view of the New York City line.
Whether you are looking for a private condo, investment property, starter home or a multimillion dollar waterfront estate you can find it in here. It's such a great place, that the residents often move here and stay, preferring to do the "Shippan Shuffle" - which is when they move from house to house within Shippan itself.
For the sailing enthusiasts there's the Stamford Yacht Club, a private member's only club. The club has a standing position in the community. Also for the sports enthusiasts, there's the Stamford Racquet Club for tennis and racquet ball and also Planet Fitness, offering a complete gym experience.
Less than five miles from the Stamford train station, makes it an easy commute into New York City.
Retail shopping:
Agabhumi where they specialize in delightful fashions from afar. A perfect place to shop for the perfect unique gift!
Juliska's for the finest in home goods. known for their beautiful table settings..."possibly the most beautiful in the world". Anything the perfect hostess needs can be found here. And when you need a break from shopping, you can catch your breath, a cup of java and a quick snack in the J Cafe.
Barry and Fred - a new shop opened recently, a hip and fresh outlet store, offering discounts on luxury items.
And there's a host of smaller antiques shops sprinkled throughout the canal and Magee street area.
Food and beverage:
Shop-rite grocery storeAnd then there's Fairway, while not officially in Shippan, it's a quick ride. And true to it's marketing campaign, it's like no other market in the world. The olive oil section is impressive in itself, not to mention the wineshop connected to it.
Restaurants:
Royal Guard's Fish and Chips - a childhood favorite of mine. This was always Friday's dinner. Great fish and affordable.
Brennan's - pub like food and cozy atmosphere
Specialties:
Sunny Daes Ice Cream Parlor - after a good game of soccer or a day of sun at the beach, will always result in smiles all around. Or if you want dessert, before dinner - Sunny Daes is always a crowd pleaser.
Often in the news, Shippan was most recently the home of Gov. Dan Malloy, previous mayor of Stamford. On a summer day one may see movie cameras and film crews as they are filming the next blockbuster or HBO special.
Looking for a new home in Stamford? Perhaps you're looking for a community like Shippan? Contact me and I'l be happy to discuss some really great Shippan options for all price ranges.

On February 10 a New York Times writer did a great write up on Shippan Point. He really gets into why this is such a great and different waterfront community and why everyone loves living there calling it very "down to earth" with a great mix of people. He covers pricing of the homes, schools, commuting and a bit of history as well. If you would like to read the full article, point your browser here.

If you would like to know more about this great community, feel free to contact me. I live there!

Both of these homes closed in 2010! And I found buyers for them who absolutely just love them completely! They actually sought out this specific community and an agent who thoroughly knows the market and the community there. 2267 Shippan Ave is a gracious old Victorian home with stunning waterviews out over the point and a detached 3 car garage. The new owner plans some wonderful renovations. 47 Ralsey is an nicely updated home with great flow and character with a deep yard and detached 2 car garage. If you live in Shippan, welcome your new neighbors. If you want to live in Shippan and currently don't, call me so that I can find the perfect home for you too!
