About Washington's National Zoo

Friday Fotos: Polly Wanna Cracker?

This showy fellow is another resident of the bird housed at Washington"s National Zoo. Not sure whether his name is Polly. Probably not. But he certainly adds a lot of color to the place.

Friday Fotos: More Birds

I followed this fellow all over the bird hosue at the National Zoo. I say "fellow" because of the amazing bright blue on his face. There was another bird flirting wih him who looked really plain Jane - no color in her feathers except for boring beige. But this one was worth stalking for a good shot.

Wordless Wednesday: Pretty Bird

This fellow lives in the National Zoo's bird house. And I can only wonder what he would look like with his feathers totally opened up.

If you visit the zoo, this is one building you might want to check out. The birds sort of have the run of the place, and there's a lot of interaction with their human visitors.

Friday Fotos: Here Kitty Kitty!

Today, we spent Black Friday at the National Zoo instead of going to the malls to battle for bargains. And my favorite animals here are the cheetahs. They have a pretty big open area, and the best time to visit is early in the morning when it's feeding time. The zookepers put a piece of cloth that the cheetahs are supposed to think is a rabbit, and they whip it around a track that wraps around their area at very high speed. When the cats are exhaused from chasing their "prey", they get real meat. After breakfast, they kick back, sort of like this fellow.

The National Zoo is a great place to visit, whether you live nearby in Northwest Washington or are here on vacation.

Cool Cat

It's still really hot here in the nation's Capital. And all over town, people and animals are really feeling it.

This fellow lives in a fur coat in the cheetah pen at the National Zoo. And it does not have central air conditioning. In more temperate weather, these guys can be seen running through their habitat at incredible speeds, but not today.
