This last Saturday was the 104th Annual Arden Fair in Arden, Delaware, an artists community that was once a summer getaway for Philadelphians who kept cottages there. It was founded on the principles of Henry George as a single tax community. You don't own the land and don't pay County taxes, but pay a flat fee to Arden every year. No matter how large your home, you share common paths and woodlands with your fellow Ardenites. Above you see some of the arts and crafts vendors, and my favorite part, the Flea Market. This year I purchased a pair of etched crystal candlestick holders for $3 (with one defect). And no, I wasn't interested in the Kelly green chairs in the foreground.
Since Arden hosts Shakespearean plays in a glen outside the Gild Hall, it was appropriate for Lady Aimee to sell period costumes--indeed many Ardenites strolled the grounds so garbed. As you can see, the community is wooded, and a great gathering place is the "Shady Grove," where the beer flowed, and the best of the "Wurst" served delicious Weisswurst with sauerkraut...Yummmm! I'm already looking forward to next Labor Day weekend!
