HGTV's new show, Showhouse Showdown, created quite a stir in the otherwise quiet Darley Green townhouse development in Claymont, Delaware. Often noted as the site of the now demolished Brookview apartment community, its previous claim to fame was as the home of Joe Biden's family.

The "Showhouse Showdown" format comes from an Irish television show by the same name, to which HGTV bought the rights. No other design show actually reveals 10 rooms, according to publicity. "We start side by side, revealing one before the first commercial. What is ... unique is that the public actually decides who wins." Most design-competition shows only reveal the final product in the last quarter of the show, and the winner is determined by other people involved or the host.

So the first 100 people got little cards which allowed them to vote on which of the designs on the second floor of side by side townhouses was the best. I didn't get there early, but when I joined the crowd, a woman gave me a ballot because she said she had an extra one. But after standing around for around 20 minutes while the woman with the bullhorn was waiting for some kind of signal to let the crowd (I presume in small groups) file into the first house, the heat got to me and I gave my card to a woman standing next to me. It turns out she remembered me from a CMA I had done for her many years ago.

So I guess you will have to wait until some time in August for Showhouse Showdown to see what the designers were doing inside. They are supposed to be local designers, but I ran into a woman from Allentown PA (2 hours away) who said she knew the designer. Nervously telling me she was not supposed to tell anyone about her connection and that he was from her hometown, she said everything was supposed to be hush-hush. I guess that's a generous definition of "local designer." Wonder who the other designer is. Their website has applications for designers to sign up, and the web goes EVERYWHERE.
