The east coast has been slammed with snow and Delaware is just one of those States! With all this snow I've already discussed Hypothermia, Frostbite and now my part 3 of 3 on "Trench Foot".
Trench foot is a medical conition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to a damp, unsanitary as well as cold condition. Today's snow storm of up to 23 inches is just the right recipe for developing this condition of Trench Foot!
Affected feet may become numb and turn red or blue as a result of poor vascular supply. Feet may also begin to decay if the condition worsens. Many folks will often get blisters and open sores which can lead to fungal infections known as "Jungle rot" or the "tropical ulcer."
If the foot is left untreated it can result in Gangrene which may result in an amputation.
If Trench foot is treated properly then a complete recovery is normal.
Prevention
Trench foot is easily prevented by keeping the feet warm and dry, and changing socks frequently.
It was a particular problem for soldiers in trench warfare, hence the name, during the winters of World Wars I & II as well as the Vietnam War.
During World War I, trench soldiers were provided with whale grease and told to apply it to their feet, to reduce the prevalence of this condition; the idea was to make the feet waterproof. It was found, however, that this made the condition worse as it made the feet perspire and absorb even more water. It was also discovered that a key measure was regular foot inspections by officers.
So be sure to observe your foot this weekend and change wet socks frequently when you walk outside in the snow!
Remember these tips and you will do just fine! Keep Warm and Stay bundled up!
Thanks for listening!

With all the up to 23 inches of snow today here in Delaware it is important to remind you of a condition called "Hypothermia". What is it? Hypo means "under" or "below" and therm means temperature. It is a condition in which the core temperature drops below that required for a normal metabolism as well as body functions. In all warm-blooded animals the core body temperature is maintained near a constant level through what is called "Homeostasis" & "Thermoregulation" but when the body is exposed to cold, it's internal mechanisms may not be able to replenish all the heat that is being lost due to the cold surroundings.
It is important to remember that extended exposure to cold may lead to death.
If you have heard of "Hyperthermia" that is the opposite of "Hypothermia" which is present in heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
If you have kids that wish to play in the snow, limit the time they play outside and keep them bundled up well! Keep a strict eye on kids outside in this kind of weather.
Just some safety tips about Hypothermia.
In my next 2 posts we will discuss: Frostbite and Trench Foot.
Thanks for listening!

How does the body react to cold conditions?
When in a cold environment, most of your body's energy is used to keep your bodys internal temperature warm. Over time, your body will begin to shift blood flow from your extremities (your hands, feet, arms, and legs) as well as the outer skin to the core (your chest and abdomen areas). This process will allow the exposed skin and the extreme coolness to rapidly increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. If you combine this with cold water, and trench foot may also be a problem.
What are the most common cold induced problems?
Hypothermia, Frostbite, and Trench Foot.
You don't want any of that today! 23 inches of snow might be fun for the kids but you seriously don't want to get any of this!
Be bundled up and stay warm! Your body is not meant to be in a freezer!
Just a reminder!

Conditions are expected to intensify with heavy snowfall and strong winds that will make driving exceptionally dangerous. Given the anticipated strength of this storm, DelDOT crews are expected to concentrate on major arteries for plowing, initially leaving many secondary roads unattended.
The National Weather Service is predicting snowfall will total between 15 and 23 inches in New Castle County, from 19 to 29 inches in Kent County and from 17 to 27 inches in Sussex County.
A blizzard warning is in effect for Kent and Sussex counties, where winds are expected to gust from 40 to 50 mph.
Snow may be mixed with sleet tonight in Sussex County.
As of 10 tonight and until further notice, the emergency declaration allows only emergency vehicles and essential personnel on the roads until further notice. The Governor will evaluate the conditions of the roads after the storm passes on Saturday morning to determine how long this restriction will remain in place. Private sector businesses are strongly urged to consider the safety of their employees and the restriction of travel during the storm when deciding whether to remain operating. Abandoned vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense.
"For your safety, the safety of our emergency personnel, and the safety of all Delawareans, drivers should stay off the roads once this storm begins and intensifies," Markell said. "Our state agencies have been working together to prepare for and combat the effects of this storm. Remaining off the roads helps them in this effort and is important to public safety."
The Emergency Operations Center of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency has been activated, National Guard personnel and equipment have been placed around the state to be used if needed for emergency transportation and rescues, and plans are being made between emergency managers and the American Red Cross to open shelters throughout the state should the need.
