Laurel, founded in 1683 and incorporated in 1883, is home to more historic buildings than any town in Delaware with 800 on the National Historic Record.
Laurel was plotted in 1802 after the sale of an Indian reservation along the Broad Creek. It was named for the laurel trees growing along the creek's banks.
Laurel is well-known for its water recreation opportunities, including Trap Pond and Trussum Pond, homes to the northernmost natural stand of bald cypress trees in North America. Included are the two tallest trees in Delaware. Recreation includes fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, camping, bird watching, biking and horseback riding.
Laurel's population is now 3,688. The business district is being revitalized by the Laurel Redevelopment Corporation, which is focusing on the redevelopment of the creek side and downtown districts. Many businesses have also located on busy U.S. 13 in Laurel.

On any given night in Lewes, Delaware, there are more dinner parties being hosted than anywhere else in the country! At least that's what the Hostess for the Historic Lewes Farmer's Market Dinner reported last evening.

Maybe that's where the idea came from. First we all met at the Lewes Historical Society complex for a wine and cheese reception. Despite the forecast, it was a sunny late afternoon as we mingled and learned where we were going to be having dinner.

We were each given a card with the name of our Hosts, their address and directions! There were about 10 hosts at various homes throughout Lewes and each welcomed about a dozen people into their homes for delicious meals prepared with local produce. Our Hosts are known for their culinary talents and we had a great time with old and new friends. We all agreed that this should become a regular event. The Historic Lewes Farmer's Market has become popular with locals and visitors alike and this season looks to be bigger and better than ever!
