Sea Turtle Conservation Buy In Destin
The casual lifestyle of residents in Destin, Florida and along the 30a corridor is stimulated by the wonderful beaches and of course the incredible marine life. Sea turtles are one of the most intriguing types of marine life that Destin and 30a corridor have to offer and the survival of these turtles is paramount to the balance of nature. The Kemp ridley sea turtles are amongst some of the most interesting and most endangered of these turtles. in the year 1947 a film maker filmed almost 40,000 females nesting along the beaches of Mexico and now it is believed that only 1000 females of nesting age are still alive today.
This perplexing situation is known to be caused by over harvesting the turtles eggs by humans and other dangers including entrapment in fisherman's trawling nets, destruction of nesting area's and predators such as birds and mammals.CITES (The Convention of International Trade for Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Wild Flora) is a treaty created in 1973 for the protection of endangered species making it against the law to harm any sea turtle or it's eggs. In addition, The National Marine Fisheries Service funded millions to create and distribute the TED a small device implanted in trawling nets by fisherman allowing sea turtles to escape so they would not drown in the nets. All eight sea turtle species are on the endangered and threatened wildlife list.
It is believed that the Kemp ridley turtles travel two major routes in the Gulf of Mexico. One of those routes in the Gulf of Mexico takes the turtles to the South Eastern States of the United States. Some sea turtles are known to travel at least 1500 miles to nest. If you see a sea turtle on shore and it appears to be crying do not worry. The secretion comes from glands designed to expel excess sea salt from the turtle and helps to protect the turtles eyes from sand as the turtle prepares the nest.
The sea turtle hatch-lings race to the water as quickly as possible in search of safety from preditors. Most species hatch at night though some hatch during the day. They race for their survival in attempt to continue life given to them by ancestors over 200 million years ago. It is believed by scientist that all sea turtle species are descendants of one kind.

Some sea turtles can measure up to 5 feet and can weigh up to 600 pounds with the ability to remain under water for up to two hours. The leatherback turtle can dive thousands of feet enabling him to reach treats such as jellyfish. The leatherback is the largest sea turtle species and has been charted diving as deep as almost 3300 feet. Sea turtles have been known to cross breed except for the leatherback and the flatback.

Worlds Most Beautiful Beaches
Sugar white beaches along the Famous 30a corridor. Why?
The 30a corridor and Destin, Florida is known for the most beautiful beaches and has been officially voted " the most beautiful beaches in the world" but why? Emerald green waters glisten above the sandy shores of the 30a corridor and Destin, Florida. Unlike other southern coastal beaches walking along the panhandle Florida beaches causes a faint squeaking noise beneath you feet. This is created by oval shaped grains of sand that have washed to the beaches from 130 miles away.
This pristine white sand, "sugar white" as the locals call it, comes from east of Fort Walton washed in from the Apalachicola River. The perfectly oval quartz shaped by mother nature washes in from 130 miles creating perfection as it glistens in the sun. The quartz reflects through the waters creating immense hues from emerald to turquoise.

The 30 a corridor in know for having over 18 pristine " sugar white" beaches. Destin, Florida's reputation gets a good old fashion size of double dipping. Not only is Destin part of the 30a corridor known for the "world's most beautiful beaches" but Destin has been dubbed the "worlds luckiest fishing village".
Deep water is within a relatively short distance from the "sugar white" shore line in Destin. Most of the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico takes, on an average, at least twice as long to reach the depths needed for a successful fishing trip. Fisherman live and visit the 30a corridor in search of the worlds record size Warsaw Grouper.
The locals call the waters the "eighteen" as it sports along it's bottom reefs, rocks, grasses and last but not least, drained of any pollutants with careful intent, artifical reefs created by sunken ships, boats, and barges. Concrete blocks, rocks and automobiles are contained in these intentionally sunk vessels.
These natural and artificial reefs attract and shelter fish in turn making the "eighteen" the luckiest fishing in the Worlds Luckiest Fishing Village. The reefs have been known to lead to the most exciting fishing available.
The WORLD RECORD WARSAW GROUPER was caught weighing 485 pounds and measuring six feet long by four feet wide. Destin is home of over 140 fishing boats that you can charter to break this world record yourself.

Beach Flag Wanings Jellyfish Found
Be sure to look for the colored beach flag warning signs and jellyfish in Destin, Florida. The flags that fly on the beaches of Destin, Florida and Santa Rosa, Fl and along the Florida Panhandle Gulf Coast are hung for the safety of everyone enjoying the pristine white beaches and emerald green waters.
The flags are there to inform visitors and warn them of the swimming conditions that could potentially be dangerous.

Green flags indicate that the water is safe.
Yellow shows the need to stay close to shore and be cautious.,
Purple means that marine pests are present such as jellyfish know for their poisonous stinging.
Double red flags signify that there is absolutely no swimming allowed due to high winds and
undertow currents.
Take the warning of these flags very seriously.
If you see purple flags be sure to keep a sharp lookout for the following types of jellyfish.
Types of Jelly Fish found along the Florida Panhandle are as follows:
Cannonball Jellyfish
These are the most common type found in the Gulf of Mexico. Cannonball jellyfish are relatively harmless unless encountered in large numbers. They are characterized by a round, rigid bell and reddish-brown pattern, tennis- to soccer-ball size.
Moon Jellyfish. Don't let this beautiful sea creature fool you. Picture below.
Surfers fear these the most---30 minutes or so of burning and itching await the unlucky swimmer who runs into a moon jellyfish. They are usually clear or white-tinted, with a pinkish cloverleaf pattern in the center, 3 to 20 inches across.
Sea Nettle Sea nettles have a slightly darker brown body compared with moon jellyfish, with more tentacles hanging underneath, and are usually 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Their sting is also more painful, with itching possibly lasting for several weeks.
Portuguese Man O' War
More rare, but deadly, the Portuguese man o' war is easy to spot---and avoid---due to the purple or blue air-filled sacs that float above them in the water, one to 12 or more inches across, although the tentacles are very long.
Even dead and washed up on the shore, this jellyfish can still sting and poison, so never touch it.
Jellyfish increase with availability of their prey, as well as seasonally, numbers rising with the temperature. Highest numbers near shore are usually June through August.
