New Year’s Fire Closes Florida Keys Luxury Resort: Lodging is Scarce

The largest fire in the last 20 years of Florida Keys history closes luxury resort the Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada Florida Keys. Florida Keys Vacation Rentals may be scarce.

According to the resort they are closed indefinitely for repairs. Although the web site currently makes no mention of the closing or the fire.

For vacation travelers this is bad news. January, February and March are the peak travel times to the Florida Keys and many places are already booked. Guests of Cheeca are encouraged to contact the resort for other arrangements.

My suggestion would be to explore a privately owned vacation rental home that can be rented through any of the local real estate companies. And also, to consider staying in a different area of the Florida Keys like Marathon.

In Marathon, for example, you can rent a luxury penthouse, oceanfront unit that will sleep up to six for just $1700 for the week and have a full kitchen, maid service is available for an additional fee.

Dead fish are causing a stink in Lower Matecumbe Key on Columbus Drive in the Florida Keys. Unhappy residents reported that over the lat month as many as 200 dead mullet and 200 dear grunts and snappers have been found floating in their canal. Fish and Wildlife attribute this to depleted oxygen levels in the long canal and not an algae bloom. Either way the residents are rightly concerned with the uncommon problem.
