About Melbourne's Lake Washington

I can never get over the indescribable beauty of a sunset. Every one is different than the one before and will be different than the next one. It's as if the brush strokes were carefully painted on a blank canvas to form the perfect combination of colors.

Lake Washington is the 41st largest lake in Florida and the largest lake in Brevard County FL, 4362 acres. It is one of the lakes that makes up the St. Johns River.

The John A Buckley water treatment plant sits near the mouth of Lake Washington. The lake is Melbourne's most important source of fresh water. In addition to providing fresh water to the city of Melbourne the plant also serves other surrounding cities.

Boaters launch their small motor boats at the boat ramps and head out for a day of fishing. Airboat enthusiasts love to hit the lake. There is a playground and picnic areas nearby with public restrooms.

What's so special about Melbourne, Florida? I'm glad you asked! Besides being a tropical, beachside paradise, there is much to do in this area! After visiting two states on two separate trips recently, I decided NOT to take a vacation to another state next year. There is so much right here in our own backyard to see and enjoy. So it gets a little hot in the summer but doesn't it everywhere? Our high has been 95 degrees for the most part of our season. I have seen many other places particularly in the north hit near 100 or over this year!

Here is a top 10 list of my places to see and things to do right here in "my own backyard"

1. GO TO THE BEACH! Isn't that what Florida is about?! The full moon is beautiful coming up over the Atlantic Ocean as well as an early sunrise.

2. Visit the Brevard Zoo http://www.brevardzoo.org/

3. Watch a rocket launch or a space shuttle launch

4. Watch the sun set over the Indian River

5. Watch manatees swim at Crane Creek

6. Have lunch at historic downtown Melbourne then go antiquing

7. Watch a baseball spring training game at Space Coast Stadium http://www.springtrainingonline.com/teams/washington.htm

8. Go turtle watching at night. From June to Sept or Oct. Sea Turtles come up on the beach and head for the dunes to lay their eggs. It is the most awesome thing to see! (just don't touch the baby turtles when they finally hatch - huge fines imposed)

9. Visit the King Center for Performing Arts. The King Center hosts Music groups, Bands, Comedians, Shows and all kinds of entertainment. http://www.kingcenter.com/

10. Just go for a drive on A1A at dusk in a convertible with the top down and take in the fresh, salty air. End up at Dell's Freeze for a Banana split http://www.insiderpages.com/b/12380285094. Enjoy it across the street at Ballard Park while viewing the Eau Gallie bridge that crosses the Indian River. What a site!

These are just a few of the things I like to do right here at home. Why wouldn't everyone want to move & live here? Life just doesn't get much better than this!
