The class will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2012, from 10 am – 1 pm at the Melbourne Beach Community Center on Ocean Ave in Melbourne Beach. The cost is $10, and includes refreshments and snacks. The $10 fee is payable at the door on the day of the event by cash or check only.

Join in the fun this weekend at the pirate-themed “Shiver Me Timbers 5K and Fun Walk” in Melbourne Beach, FL!

The run/walk is hosted by Brevard County Parks and Recreation, and will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the South Beach Community Center at 500 Old Florida Trail in Melbourne Beach.

For the inaugural “Shiver Me Timbers 5K and Fun Walk”, participants are invited to dress in pirate gear as they run and walk around the race course, which encompasses the grounds of the South Beach Community Center in Melbourne Beach. The race is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities; the goal of the “Shiver Me Timbers 5K and Fun Walk” is for participants to just enjoy themselves while getting a little bit of exercise, dressed as a pirate, of course! Arrrggghhh, Matey!

The “Shiver Me Timbers 5K and Fun Walk” is the second event in Brevard County Parks and Recreation’s new “Run Brevard: ReCreate Your Life” series. The series kicked off in December with the Reindeer Dash 5K in Viera, and will include 5 additional races (including Shiver Me Timbers) throughout Brevard County Parks through June 2012. After “Shiver Me Timbers”, the series will continue with the ”Forever Hearts 5K and Walk” Saturday, Feb. 18 at Rodes Park Community Center in West Melbourne; the “5K at the Bay and Fun Walk” Saturday, March 10 at Barefoot Bay in Micco; the “Space Coast Sports Festival 5K Race and Fun Walk” Saturday, May 26 at Wickham Park in Melbourne and the “Hurricane Hustle 5K & Windy Walk” Saturday, June 16 at the Ted Whitlock Community Center in Palm Bay.

The inaugural “Shiver Me Timbers 5K and Fun Walk” will start at 8am on Saturday, January 14th at the South Beach Community Center in Melbourne Beach. Entry fees are $18 for runners and $12 for walkers, or $14 for runners and $11 for walkers if you pre-register, with t-shirts guaranteed to the first 100 entrants. Sandbar Pizza Grill - Family Friendly Restaurant in Melbourne Beach, FL

If you are looking for a family-friendly restaurant in Melbourne Beach, FL, don’t miss the Sandbar Pizza Grill on Ocean Ave. The name of the restaurant pretty much sums up their menu – they have pizza and they have “grill”-type items such as burgers, sandwiches, wings, wraps, burritos, and salads, as well as their famous (and amazingly delicious!) fish tacos.

The Sandbar Pizza Grill is not fancy and it doesn’t have a ton of seating, but it has friendly service, good food, and great prices. And, if your kids are a little bit loud, it’s okay, the Sandbar Pizza Grill is, as I mentioned, very family friendly. One of the best features of the Sandbar Pizza Grill in Melbourne Beach is their daily specials. A couple of the most popular nights at the Sandbar are Tuesdays, for Taco Tuesdays, and Fridays, for $5 Fridays. However, be warned, seating is limited and the restaurant fills up fast, so get there early, or expect to wait for a seat.

So back to Taco Tuesdays… half price tacos – fish, chicken, steak, or shrimp. The fish tacos, in my opinion, are the only way to go. I’ve had fish tacos in all the places known for fish tacos – San Diego, Costa Rica, etc – and the Sandbar’s fish tacos rate right up there with the best of them. You can order them grilled, blackened, or Baja-style, they are all very tasty. And for every 3 tacos you order, you get a free side order of black beans and yellow rice or french fries. Great deal! My other favorite night at the Sandbar Pizza Grill in Melbourne Beach is $5 Fridays where you can get either 2 tacos, a burrito, or a wrap for just $5. Bargain!

Some of the other specials include Wednesday Pizza Night, when you can get a 20-inch pizza for the price of a 14-inch, and Thursday Kids Night, when kids eat free off the Sandbar’s kid’s menu from 4 pm – 10 pm. The Sandbar also features about 12 televisions mounted around the restaurant, which feature both college football games and NFL Ticket, perfect for the sports-fans members of your family. The restaurant also serves serves beer and wine, so it’s a great place to meet friends for a drink and some wings, and hang out to watch the game.
