The City of Miami Beach unveiled a new installation for the Art in Public Places project during the tenth Art Basel Miami Beach. The unique lighthouse designed by German artist Tobias Rehberger is not to guide ships; however, it will greet visitors to the city with cheerful, multi-colored lighting that underlines the lively spirit of the city.

The 55’ deconstructed lighthouse towering over Government Cut at South Pointe Park is the first permanent and public project in the United States for the internationally renowned artist. Rehberger has completed numerous public art pieces in Germany, France, Italy, Korea, Japan. He is also a professor at the University of Fine Arts, Frankfurt, Germany. He has had more than 80 solo museum shows in some of the most respected museums in the world. He has been awarded several international art awards.

Rehberger said the location for this art project in South Pointe Park is what makes it even more special. “I wanted it to become a symbol that not only marks the area and greets all the visitors that pass through Government Cut every day by boat. It also brings together some of the key attributes the city stands for: a vital zest for life; art and design; and a sculpture that is designed as a modern playful interpretation of a beacon including the moving lights at the top,” he said.

The lighthouse marks the city’s 18th art in public places project with the first project being Mermaid by Roy Lichtenstein in 1979, which was Lichtenstein’s first public project. Other projects recently completed projects are by Wendy Wischer, Dan Graham and Brian Tolle. Almost two dozen works of art by artists showcased in galleries and museums around the world grace city parks, street corners, sidewalks, theater lawns, public buildings and even City Hall.

South Pointe Park sits in the South of Fifth neighborhood, the lighthouse stands in the shadow of the Portofino Tower, one of the many luxury condo buildings in the South of Fifth neighborhood.

Plans Underway to Re-Open South Pointe Pier

For over a decade, Miamians have watched and wondered about what’s going to happen to the South Pointe Pier. The pier was built in the 1970s and shut down in 2004 with plans for rehabilitation. The 35-year-old structure showed signs of weaking concrete due to the salt water over time.

The Akins North America firm recently completed the designs for the new pier and is waiting for the final approval from the Design Review Board. The new pier will be the same length as the old one…. it will be like a telescope, narrower at the beach (west) end and wider at the ocean (east) end. The pier will be 12 feet wide at the west (park) end and 24 feet wide at the east (ocean) end. It will have the same approximate footprint as the existing pier (475 feet long), which will be demolished. The new design has designated areas for fishing and relaxation. The surface will likely be concrete, with benches and shaded areas. The pier will stay open in conjunction with park hours and will be lit at night with turtle safe lighting.

The city is currently seeking a construction firm to handle the project, which is budgeted at $4.5 million and expected to open in two years. The re-opening of the pier will add even more allure to the newly remodeled South Pointe Park and the South of Fifth (SoFi) neighborhood which is home to some of the South Beach’s most expensive ultra luxury condo buildings If everything goes as planned locals and visitors will finally get a chance to get a view of marine life and a chance to fish from South Pointe Pier.

Jamey & Ognjen Prezzi Miami Beach Luxury Condos & Homes: Real Estate Agent in Miami Beach, FL

Miami Beach Luxury Rentals is a large part of our business. Although there are agents who do short term and vacation rentals, we only do the yearly rentals. Most of our clients come from large cities up North, like New York and they rent a unit for a year to use when they need to do business in Miami. Sometimes they live here year round, some use it as a weekend getaway, a monthly getaway or whatever they choose to use it for during the year.

After a year, quite a few of them decide to move here full time and eventually buy.

It’s often a lot more cost effective to rent a unit here for the year rather than paying for expensive hotel suites for a long week here and there.

The more popular buildings for renting a Miami Beach luxury rental are located in the South of Fifth area of Miami Beach. This neighborhood is a small area in Miami Beach’s South Beach neighborhood from 5th street to 1st street and from the Biscayne Bay to the Ocean.

Miami Beach and one of its most desirable areas: SOUTH OF 5TH (aka: SOFI)

South of Fith Miami Beach

The neighborhood on the south tip of Miami Beach, namely South of Fifth is perfectly suited for people who desire a lot of action without having to move their cars.

Everything is walking distance and the variety of restaurants and bars is great.

Beautifully tree-lined walkways, innovative restaurants and views of Fisher Island, Biscayne Bay, Government Cut and the Atlantic Ocean make this place very unique.

Speaking of restaurants:

The Murano at Portofino features exquisite European cuisine at La Piaggia.

The famous Joe’s stone crabs known for its delicious claws is right across the street.

Prime 112 is recognized for its best meat on the block.

Guests of Smith & Wollensky can watch enormous Cruise ships depart from the port and wave at their passengers while going by.

These are just a few of the world-class restaurants in the SoFi district…and just one of the reasons what makes SoFi so attractive.

Sofi is also very much enjoyed by active folks like joggers, roller-bladers and dog-walkers who appreciate the relaxed atmosphere of this area with its many towering luxury condominium buildings.

Here a little history:

In 1987 when John Hinson built South Pointe Towers, SoFi began its recent revival. The 25-story structure on the site of an old dog track cost Hinson $7 million.

In 1992, the German commodities broker Thomas Kramer had a vision for this run down area and purchased $100 million worth of land. His idea was to recreate the one of its kind ambiance of Portofino, Italy.

In 1997, the PORTOFINO TOWER CONDOS were built on the 3.44-acre Alaska Parcel.

Thomas Kramer, aka TK sold this waterfront development among other parcels to the Related Group, that planned a reduced-density development.

They reserved for the city a parcel of parkland, SOUTH POINT PARK.

Condominum buildings like The YACHT CLUB, The MURANO AT PORTOFINO, the MURANO GRANDE, The PORTOFINO TOWERS and the ICON MIAMI BEACH are some of the condos that are highly desirable for people who are looking for a home away from home or enjoy living there year round.

The APOGEE was Related Groups' latest and last SoFi achievement – an ultra-luxury, 67-unit condominium ranging between $4 to $15 million.

There are great condos for sale in each of these buildings in Sofi and if you are looking for real estate in this area, please contact me and I am happy in helping you finding your dream home.
