Yard Waste – From Trees to Dirt
According to “Don” – one of the employees at the Sarasota County Recycling Center, this is what happens to yard waste when it is turned from trees to dirt.
As private and public contractors; as well as homeowners enter the recycling center at 4000 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis, FL 34275 with their waste, their vehicles are weighed on a scale entering and leaving. The difference in weight (the yard waste) is currently charged a rate of $41.37 per ton, or a little more than 2 cents per pound. Yard waste is always separated from construction waste, and general garbage.
When piles are sufficiently large enough, a Vermeer Horizontal grater is brought in to break down larger pieces to no more than a 6 inch diameter sieve size.
This product is then used for one of three purposes.
1.To daily cover the landfill area (garbage) to keep the presence of animals, birds, and smell to a minimum.
2.Sent to power plants for fuel to be converted into energy.
3.Made available for free mulch or dirt.
If you live in Florida, you know that from Tampa southward (about the lower half of the State) the elevation above sea level, especially close to the coasts, rarely exceeds 20 feet. Instead of burying garbage, it is mounded and daily covered so that we have man-made “mountains” of garbage rising as much as 100 feet above the surrounding elevation which are covered with mulch and dirt from the yard waste.

The Casey Key Real Estate market has increased 27% in sales volume so far this year. 16 homes have sold this year compared to 12 last year. The median sales price of homes, however, has decreased 14% from $1,925,000 to $1,650,000. It is great to see the real estate market in one of the most gorgeous barrier islands in Florida in recovery mode. The decrease in sales prices over the last few years, has broadened the pool of buyers and has caused this increase in sales volume. Although the median sales price continues to decline, at this sales volume, it won't be long for this trend to be reversed.
