The first residents were the Dexter Hubel family from Michigan in 1877. A few years later more settlers arrived. In 1984, Masjor Narthan S. Boynton from Port Huron, Michigan, toured the area and built the Boynton Beach Hotel, a showplace on the South end of Ocean Avenue, with 45 rooms and 6 cottages. In 1911, the first bridge was cuilt at Ocean Avenue, made of wood, which swung open manually for boats to go through. Boynton was incorporated as a town in 1920, and Ocean Ridge was founded by 13 families in 1931 after the area seceded from neighboring Boynton Beach. Residents include retirees, teenagers and a growing population of young affluent professionals with most residents sharing a strong desire to protect the environment. Restoration of the eroding beach, protection of sea turtles, and continued beautification are major issues. The municipality is gradually modernizing operations. The city's computer system is being overhauled, and officials are planning the expansion of city hall. Residents are well looked after by police officers who make a point of knowing everyone. Even pets have their own files at the police station.
