The long awaited expansion and re-openning of the Peter & Julie Cummings Library is now a reality as the doors will open today Tuesday, May 12th at 10:00 AM. Taking over a year to complete (because of some unexpected Sand Hill Cranes) at a cost of over 3.9 million dollars, this branch of the Martin County Library system will well serve the needs of Palm City's residents. No local tax money was used for this project as funds came from local impact fees, a state grant and donations of over 1.4 million dollars.
The ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, May 11th, was well attended by local residents as they listened speeches by library and county officials.
Highlights of the Cummings library include an Internet cafe, a youth services wing, and a childrens activity center.
Hours of operation Tueday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, on Wednesday from Noon to 8:00 PM and the library is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Located at 2551 S.W. Matheson Ave in Palm City, and ready to enhance the learning and cultural education of Martin County residents and guests.

The first time I drove through Palm City nearly ten years ago I knew it was where I wanted to buy my Florida home. As a transplant from suburban New Jersey I was seeking a family friendly town with tree lined streets, sidewalks, parks and the sense of community I enjoyed back home. I have not given it much thought since my move to Palm City in 2002, but was reminded of these qualities this week after several buyers made nearly identical comments while I showed them area homes and neighborhoods.
As we pulled into town off the I95 interchange, the first thing my clients saw was children playing and riding bikes. They were pleasantly surprised to see this and were excited to discover our little town. The scene was repeated later that day with my next clients. We arrived about 3PM and on queue kids poured out of school, gathering in groups for their walk home (not a common site in Florida where children are mostly bussed to and from school). My clients were further impressed to see people strolling, shopping and enjoying a snack at a local cafe. While touring Palm City's homes and leafy neighborhoods they decided this was where they wanted to raise their family.

What has taken decades of planning and discussion is finally about to begin. The Florida Department of transportation started releasing bidding for the new bridge to join Stuart and Palm City by 36'th Street in Palm City and Indian Street in Stuart. This long awaited project has been approved using $128 million of Federal stimulus monies and $72 million that has been raised previously through federal, state and county collections.
This bridge will alleviate congestion on the one existing Palm City Bridge that is the main route between Stuart and Palm City. In addition to making access easier between Stuart and Palm City, this project is estimated to employ 3500 workers and have a tremendous trickle down benefit for the local economy and employment levels.
While it took a very long time to be approved, many residents feel it couldn't have come at a better time.
