West Tampa began as a separate city from Tampa. In 1983 The West Tampa National Historic District was created. It is a district bi-sected by interstate 275. West Tampa has not yet been designated a local historic district by the City of Tampa. Local designation is the designation that comes with both the tax breaks and the regulatory teeth to preserve the areas architecture. A national designation just protects the area from federal spending that would damage the historic designation.
