The Golden Isles Career Academy's 123,000 square foot building is approximately 70% complete. Upon completion, there will room for 1,500 students in the 50 classrooms and shops. Located at 4404 Glynco Parkway in Brunswick (near the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, Golden Isles Career Academy is schedule for an grand opening in March of 2009 at a cost of over $19,000,000.

The first phase of the Career Academy will offer classrooms and labs for teaching construction skills, automotive skills, architecture skills as well as culinary skills. The second phase of the Golden Isles Career Academy will offer classrooms and labs for fields such as dental sciences, cosmetology, health care, law enforcement, communications and horticulture.

Students from Brunswick High, Glynn Academy and the Coastal Georgia College (going to a 4 year college as in 2009) will all be able to attend classes at the Golden Isles Career Academy. This project was funded by the Glynn County School Board, County Commission, State of Georgia as well as private sources.

This school is in direct demand to our growth and lack of skilled labor in so many areas. Unlike the rest of the nation, Glynn County's unemployment rate was 3.4% (the last time I checked Department of Labor Statistics).

Nathan Sparks, executive director of the Brunswick and Glynn County Development Authority allowed that this school was built to be proactive in responding to the needs of Glynn County businesses. "When we speak with businesses about the possibility of relocating to this area, they are very interested when they hear about our career academy," according to Sparks.

Throughout Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia, early in the mornings and late in the afternoons, you will see shrimp boats in the waters that surround Glynn County. Brunswick was once called "The Shrimp Capital of the World".

The photo above was taken on Jekyll Island looking across the waterways with the Sidney Lanier Bridge showing in the background. Shrimp are harvested along the coast of Georgia in amounts from 4 1/2 to 9 1/2 million pounds per year making it the most harvested seafood.

There is a great way to learn about the shrimping industry while taking a 2 hour tour on The Lady Jane, a shrimp boat that has been refurbished for the comfort of 49 passengers to be able to experience shrimping first hand. On this cruise, you will see the historic Marshes of Glynn, the Turtle River and Saint Simons Island sound while learning about the eco system. Captain Credle will explain the history of shrimping and the area while having a chance to see dolphin, crabs, shark, seagulls, stingrays, squid, egrets and so much more. And if that isn't enough, you are served fresh shrimp caught and cooked while you are on board.

Glynn County is taking recycling on the road. With a grant from Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Glynn County purchased a trailer that can moved to any of the many events held in Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia. "The trailer is a big rolling billboard and inside we have all the material needed for recycling,'' said Candice Temple, spokeswoman for the County Commission.

This trailer will be placed beside the trash cans and food booths are events throughout Brunswick and the Golden Isles of Georgia. Volunteers will be on hand to make sure that just plastic and aluminum recyclables are placed in the trailer bins appropriately - other trash will go into the trash cans. This allows for a cleaner alternative to landfill disposal for these recycable items.

Congratulations to the Glynn County Commission on bringing this innovative idea to life.
