Harvesting Rainwater?
What a nifty idea! Years ago, I was on city water and usage was not always on my mind...
Now, with a family of four using a well, I REALLY know the importance of making the best use of our water.
Harvesting rainwater is a great way to take care of your garden and make the most of this precious resource.
Saving water is a great practice for everyone. Lake Lanier has endured drought conditions during the summer months and there are often water restrictions in our community. Residents of Cumming, Buford, Gainesville and other neighboring suburbs of Atlanta knows water conservation is key with summer coming up.
Rainwater can be harvested in a variety of ways. Water is collected around the world using everything from standard barrels to more complex underground tanks. A very common and inexpensive type of containers used is Polyethylene.
Polyethylene is a food grade plastic and can be recycled once used, but it is important to insure that your tanks are safe for drinking water and that it can withstand high heat. These tanks can be used above and below ground and resistant to rust and chemical corrosion.
Concrete is another common type tank used, but without regularly draining and cleaning, algae can grow and contaminate the water.
Steel tanks are still the most popular type of water harvesting. Galvanized tanks have been used for over 150 years and is the most affordable choice. While metal tanks are rank high in functionality, it is important to remember that t the smallest scratch inside the tank with result is rust. It is important to regularly check these types of tanks on a regular basis or purchase a tank with a polyethylene coating to insure your water stays clean.
