In today's challenging times, some of the wonderful organizations that provide food and toys to needy
families are struggling. It is more important than ever that we reach out and help one another -- if it is a $20 toy or an hour of your time, every little bit matters.
Three easy ways to contribute to those who really need it:
1) Buy a pre-packaged bag of food from your local grocery store (Publix and Kroger have donation gift bags in the front of the store that range in price from $6 to $20
2) Stop by Wal-mart this weekend and buy a toy for a child in foster care. Clark Howard, Consumer Reporter for 750 AM radio, leads an effort each year called "Clark's Christmas Kids". His goal is to collect toys and clothes for children in foster care.
Get details and see which Walmart stores Clark will be visiting.
*** If you aren't in the Atlanta area, the Toys for Tots collection bins are all over your city.
3) Volunteer -- Anywhere, anytime. You can visit the United Way website and they offer a monthly view of all the volunteer opportunities.
Visit the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and get a list of their volunteer projects
If you also plan to donote to your favorite charity this season, please read Wise Giving to Charities, a helpful guide written by Daniel Borochoff, President of the American Institute of Philanthropy.
You can also visit Charity Navigator, an independant charity evaluator that will help you to understand how much of your money is actually reaching the person or group that needs it.

Decatur GA - Holiday Events -Decorate Decatur Community
Grab your outdoor lights, garland, luminaries and other holiday decor and get ready for the "Decorate Decatur" Contest!
On Sunday, December 14th, judges will drive through Decatur and pick their 10 favorite homes, as well as one favorite business and one favorite neighborhood. There will also be one "overall" winner that will receive the Commissioners Cup from the Decatur City Commission.
If you are planning to join in on the fun, all you have to do is pull the decorations out, flip on the lights and call 404-371-9583 to give your address and alert the Decatur judges that you will be participating in the contest.
To view the previous winners, visit the Decorate Decatur web page. The Oakhurst Business District (aka the Oakhurst Village) was one of the Business Winners last year, along with Wordsmiths and Chik-Fil-A on Trinity Avenue. My bet is on the Oakhurst Business District for 2008 as well!

Decatur, GA is full of great things to do. Have you checked out Jazz Nights in Oakhurst Village yet? Every Thursday night in April and September from 7-9 p.m. there are free Candlelit Concerts on the lawn. Even if it's raining, it's moved indoors to the Solarium.
Concerts are at 321 West Hill St, Decatur, GA in Oakhurst Village which is between downtown Decatur and the Atlanta neighborhood of Kirkwood.
Bring your blankets and some picnic food and come enjoy the beautiful evening weather we're having. Come early and enjoy a drink or get some takeout from one of the restaurants around the Village. You have your choice of great places to eat. The Universal Joint is across the street, it was a gas station, now it's a bar. Wahoo Grill is around the corner on College Ave, it's a place to eat when you want to take a little more time. Palate is a dessert and wine bar next door to the Seen Art Gallery. Don't forget pizza at MoJo Pizza and Pub for a quick bite. They have video games there too. Oakhurst Grill features specialty beer, eclectic wines and a full bar along with American Regional cuisine. Now that I've named just a few of the places in quaint Oakhurst Village, come on out and experience the atmosphere of a small town village minutes to downtown Atlanta. I think you'll like it here.
