About Eatonton's Georgia's Lake Country

Save money and help a local animal shelter at the same time.

Tammy Lankford- lake sinclair (central Georgia): Real Estate Brokerage in Eatonton, GA

Glen at 8 weeksIn the past year my husband adopted a puppy from our local shelter. I was and have always been a "cat" lover. But quickly I feel in love with Donald's little puppy. He got his puppy at the end of March last year and mid April he had to leave unexpectedly for a funeral in California. His young nephew passed away. So there I sat with a puppy. I took Glen to work with me and quickly became VERY attached to a puppy. He traveled back and forth in a laundry basket while my husband had to be away. He comes running now when Donald calls Glen. He ignores me when I say his name, but when I say "Come here mama's little puppy" he will step over anything or anyone who gets in his way and run to me.

In June of last year we also by way of rescue became the proud parents of an 8 month old black lab who was worse for wear when she showed up at my office. She was limping, down in her hip and afraid of everything. If you went to pet her she would cower down and whimper. It was obvious to both us and the vet that Laney had been mistreated. She lets up pet her now, but still prefers that you use an open hand palm up when you call her over to be petted. She has an awful burn scar on her back that is about 3 inches around.

Last year was financially challenging for us. After all I am a real estate broker and own my own firm and most of the money I made last year went back into the business and what did not went to the University of Georgia for our oldest child who is currently a junior there. And besides the unexpected cost of the flight to California for a funeral my husband also was out of work for 3 months last year with surgery. Now he did have benefits from work, but the check was not his usual pay check.

So in an effort to save money I once again became a coupon clipper. I shop the sale papers and plan my menu around what is on sale that week and clip coupons of products I buy, not products I do not buy. And with two growing puppies in the house we go through a 34 pound bag of puppy chow every week. That little guy in the clothes basket... well his mother is a Great Dane and his father is a German Shepard so he eats A LOT!

I discovered quite by accident a wonderful web site that not only allowed me to print and download a $4.00 coupon, but also when the coupon is redeemed purina would make a donation to any registered animal shelter of my choice.

Now of course I choose my local Oconee Regional Humane Society. They have a wonderful program and help lots of pets find homes and also help lower income families with the costs of spay/nutuer surgeries. So I was thrilled when I found that I could help myself and help my Glen and Laneylocal shelter at the same time. I also told all my friends and family members that are pet owners about the web site so they could do the same. I encourge you to check it out, download yourself a coupon and share this web site with your friends, family and neighbors and help yourself and help your local shelter as well.

If your local shelter isn't on the list of ones you can choose you should let them know about the program so they can register for it as well.

The afternoon I found it I told about 25 people so I hope they all participated and got our local shelter a little bit of money anyway. And who can't use a coupon these days?

So check out this web site if you are a pet owner and pass it along to your friends and family. And if you happen to not own a pet you can still tell your friends and family who are pet owners about it. As a result of so many homes having been foreclosed on there are more pets abandanded than ever before in this country. We all need to do our part and help where and how we can. This is a way for you to help that doesn't cost you a sincle penny. Just a click of the mouse and bam your shelter can get a donation and you can get a coupon too.

First of all, this is going to give away my age, but when I was a little girl in Eatonton Georgia there was still segregation. In the 1 screen movie theater in town African Americans and Caucasians were not allowed to sit together. African-Americans had to sit in the balcony. Just so everyone knows this theater has been long ago closed. My point in bringing this up is I always wanted to sit in the balcony and was never allowed.

So when I read the details about the new Spotlight Theater I was so excited. I am going to get to sit in the balcony. With whom ever I want I might add. This new 8 screen theater with stadium seating and a VIP balcony. Yup I can be a VIP... I'm sure of it.

The location of the new theater is near the I-20 Greensboro exit, very near the Reynolds Plantation entrance. I'm looking forward to a new wonderful theater.

I'll keep you posted on when it will be open. And give you a review of "the view from the balcony"

One Fish, Two Fish, no wait it's about the BIG FISH!

Tammy Lankford- lake sinclair (central Georgia): Real Estate Brokerage in Eatonton, GA

When it comes to fishing tournaments that is! Lake Sinclair and Little River Park are home to several fishing tournaments each year. This photo was taken of Austin Nix by his fishing partner and grandfather Jerrill Ewing in May of 2005 at one of those many fishing tournaments. Austin and Jerrill still fish a lot.

  1. Prizes can range from a few hundred dollars to $6,000. There are also times when boats and fishing gear are prizes as well.
  2. Tournaments are spread out throughout the year on lake Sinclair. Some upcoming dates are:

  • December 6, 2008
  • February 28, 2009
  • April 18, 2009
  • May 16, 2009
  • July 12, 2008

By clicking on each of the fish you will be directed to web sites with more and specific information about Lake Sinclair Tournaments as well as on-line registration opportunities, hotel and restaurant information as well as prizes for specified tournaments.

If you are not into tournament fishing, but just want to fish for fun or even for dinner you'll be very happy to know that Lake Sinclair as reported by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources has no limitations on how often you can eat fish and our lake has been found chemical free. Other Georgia Lakes are in this report as well and Lake Sinclair's report can be found on page 12.

So in the summer you can swim and water ski, but year-round the fishing on Lake Sinclair is fantastic. And if you decide that you really love fishing on Lake Sinclair I'd be happy to help you find your fishing cabin on our little 15,000 acre lake. Call me today!

Born and bred in the briar patch... yes I was.

The Uncle Remus Museum in Eatonton, Georgia is near and dear to my heart.   It's not just a place you should visit or a book you should read for me... for me... it's a personal journey.  You see... once upon a time I was a docent at the Uncle Remus Museum.  I started working with and for Mrs. Norma Wiliford when I was but a wee 12 years old.  It wasn't the first place I ever "worked" but I guess the convenience store across the street when I was 8 where I got paid a quarter and a coke to pick up trash from the parking lot and bag groceries doesn't REALLY count.

Miss Norma was the first curator of the Museum, so I learned the stories from the best.  She once told me she was the first woman in Putnam County to register to vote.  I have a beautiful tea cup and saucer in my curio that she gave to me and a Joel Chandler Harris story book that she signed... Love, Ms. Remus.

My person connection with the museum continued after Mrs. Wiliford passed away and the reigns of the curator passed to her daughter, Mrs. Norma Watterson.  I started working there in 1977 (yes, I just dated myself) and I worked there until November of 1992.  For many of those years it was my second and even third job.

Then 10 years later in 2002 when my only daughter was 14 it became her first job.  She worked for Mrs. Lanell Frost who is only the 3rd curator since the museum opened it's doors in 1963.

Uncle Remus Museum

I've heard people say and I've read that "The Tar Baby" story is not politically correct and that's a bunch of hooey.  It's a wonderful story and actually is African folk lore that was passed down from generation to generation.  Joel Chandler Harris who was a newspaper columnist never claimed to have authored the stories, only to have written them down for all to read.

Things at the museum look a little different than in the picture above.  There's now a second "brer rabbit" statue like the one at the court house made from the same mold on this location.  The fence has been mended from time to time, an herb garden added, a "well house" put around the spicket and the beautiful large oak lost it's life a few years ago.

When you walk through the doors it's like stepping back in time.  There are first editions of Harris' books on display, a sampling of the many languages these wonderful stories have been translated into on display, two wonderful originals from Song of the South signed by Walt Disney on display.  In the front cabin there are three large picture windows that have murals painted behind them that show what the plantation would have looked like where "Uncle Remus" told the stories to the little boy.  There are 12 shadow boxes with beautiful wooden carvings about some of the most famous stories.  There's the wooden brer rabbit on the front door that my daddy made, there's the crocheted rug inside that my mama made.  My family loves this place and I invite you to visit.

If you find that you just can not make it this way to visit this wonderful place then I invite you to read the stories.  Or order them on tape and listen to them.

Brer Rabbit Don't not read these wonderful stories, for yourself or your children or grandchildren.

If you have problems finding the books, let me know and I'll give you a hand in getting one.

Personal Motivation

Tammy Lankford- lake sinclair (central Georgia): Real Estate Brokerage in Eatonton, GA

The best motivation for me in this "slow" times is the next thing I want to spend money to improve at my office. Right now the fund we are all working on is paving the parking lot.

Over the past 10 years I've made so many changes. Just this month is my 10 year anniversary of having www.lake-sinclair.com as my web site. Shirley Howard, who has since moved back to Florida, talked me into that one.

Then there was Marvin Glover... the phone man, who talked me into a phone system that allows the agents to walk and talk. Cordless... what a blessing. Marvin passed away last October from ALS, but I'll always appreciate him.

Next in line was Nancy about 6 or so years ago... we still had dial up when she arrived at Lane Realty and she wasn't having any part of that. She harped and she harped and now we have 6.0 DSL and I have no idea how we ever lived without it. Scanning and emailing documents is so much better than fax. Of course Nancy wasn't through. She's the most experienced and most demanding agent here at Lane Realty. But everyone will be happy to know here demands are always in the spirit of helping the customer. Next we saved for our lighted sign and reader board. Then we added the bill board on 441 to direct folks down Pea Ridge Road so they won't miss us. Oh and did I mention in 2006 we started and in 2007 we completed an entire new office doubling our space. So when you stop by and enjoy our new space thank Nancy.

So at some point down the road you will see asphalt in our parking lot. We are selling homes to that end currently.

We have a small office crew and we feel like and treat one another like family. So when someone is looking for property at Lake Sinclair and you want to be treated like family... just come see us.

OR drop and and give us a virtual visit
