Macon, GA

I had my civil rights violated yesterday, and I was illegally detained. Has the United States become a police state?

Upson County Courthouse GA by Richard WeisserYesterday, I drove a client to Macon Georgia to record a survey of a property that I had just listed at the Bibb County Clerk of Superior Court. It's about a two hour drive from the office, so it gave me a good chance brainstorm with the client as we drove the Georgia backroads.

When we got to the courthouse, I had my camera in hand (as usual) and my computer case so rather than go through security, I decided to wait outside while my client recorded the survey. It was a pretty day so I thought that I could get some good photos for my blog.

The courthouse was being renovated, and was completely enveloped with scaffolding. It created unique geometric patterns that I like, so I decided to try a few shots. As I reaise the camera to my eye, I heard someone say:

"Stop, who do you work for?"

I dropped the camera down from my eye and saw an officer with the words "sheriff's department" on his attire. Since I assumed that he was asking for whom I was taking the photograph I answered:

Coweta County Courthouse GA by Richard Weisser"I work for myself."

He repeated: "Who do you work for?"

I repeated that "I work for myself."

He then informed me that I was not permitted to take pictures of the courthouse. Now, I was standing on a public sidewalk in a public space. I am not aware of any codified law that I was breaking. I agreed not to take any pictures because I did not want to cause an incident.

He proceeded to ask:

"Where are you from and what are you doing here?"

And though it was none of his business, I told him that my associate and I were "recording a survey."

"What kind of survey? What is it about?"

At that point I realized that he misunderstood what I had said. He was still convinced that I was working for someone, and when I said that I was "recording a survey" he thought that I meant that I was "videotaping on the street interviews" or something like that.

I said "We are here conducting county business."

At that point, he asked to see my identification.

Meriwether County Courthouse GA by Richard WeisserAfter demonstrating that I had no shots of the courthouse, he "allowed" me to leave. I was boiling inside but I bit my tongue.

This is the United States of America. We have rights that are protected by the Constitution. The officer had no legal basis to detain me.

Have we become so paranoid that we have forfeited our civil rights and have turned over unlimited authority to armed police? Is taking a photograph of a public building a suspicious act?

If so, there are thousands of potential terrorists in Washington D.C. every day, casually snapping photos of our national monuments. I'll bet they don't know that they are subject to being detained for their anti-American behavior.

I wish that I could add a photo of the Bibb County Courthouse on this post, but since I was prohibited from doing so, I have provided other photos of courthouses around Georgia.

It is a sad day in America when those charged with enforcing the law do not respect it. It is sadder that our civil rights have been forfeited for the pretense of security, and when law abiding citizens are interrogated and detained without probable cause.

A sad day indeed.

A dental chair is the LAST place I'd like to be, but...

Tammy Lankford- lake sinclair: Real Estate Brokerage in Eatonton, GA

I don't like to go to the dentist. Okay, that's a serious understatement. I HATE going to the dentist. But in recent years with my parents "good teeth" started to break and loose fillings I have decided that it is necessary even if I hate it.

I had some dentral trauma as a child and I had a horrible root canal as an adult. After I got my crown I waited 15 years before going back to a dentist and I really didn't like the dentist I did go to see after that.

But in the past few years my husband has needed some major dental work including some oral surgery and he likes his dentist, so recently I gave them a try and I have to admit it was the best experience I've ever had in a dental chair.

I went to The Dental Care Center in Macon Georgia on Mercer University Drive. I readily admit I'm a pansy when it comes to the dentist. And maybe that is an understatement also.

And when the hygienist saw that I brought my husband to the room with me to have my teeth cleanedshe asked if there was a problem. When my husband burst into laughter and said that I might need a little prompting to open my mouth. I asked if she could just knock me out and clean my teeth, but unfortunately that's not an option for just a cleaning. BUT, she did offer a spray on analgesic and that was a first for me. Of course it's two days later and my gums hurt, so I would have liked it more if she'd let me bring that little bottle home with me, but over all I got my teeth cleaned and it wasn't SO bad. She asked if I'd be back in 6 months and while I'm not up for THAT often I may go back in a year.

The only down side to my fondness of the new dentist is location. They are located about 45 minutes from Lake Sinclair. Of course there is an upside to the location, they are right next door to Macon Mall and right down the street from Sam's Club, so I also got some shopping done.

So if you, like me, are not so fond of going to the dentist. You might want to give The Dental Care Center a try. It's really not THAT bad.

Moving South, Macon Cherry Blossom Festival

Charlie Ragonesi 706- 579-1098: Real Estate Brokerage in Big Canoe, GA

If you do not want to go to Washington DC one of the biggest Cherry blossom festivals in the US is just kicking off in Macon Georgia. The city is Ante-Bellum and just a real gem from the beauty of the Cherry Blossom Festival to the architecture of the homes. It is also amazing what 200 feet in altitude and 130 miles south will do to making spring come early to an area.

We were there visiting friends this week. If you are in the area next weekend will probably be good for the beautiful tress as well. Enjoy

Ocmulgee Indian Festival in Macon Georgia

Tammy Lankford- lake sinclair: Real Estate Brokerage in Eatonton, GA
There is an annual festival about 45 minutes from my home, yet I hadn't attended in years. While it wasn't the same as the last time I went, like so many other things in this world it has become so much more commercialized than I would prefer.... it is still a worthy place to visit and if you can come durning the Festival the 3rd weekend each September all the better. There were lots of beautiful things on display made by native Americans... some from all over the country. My husband and I saw a lot of beautiful handcrafted pieces and bought his mom a really cool painting on a feather and framed nicely. The artist was from Cherokee. She signed and named the painting. But other than the actual festival it's still a lovely place to visit. It's very moving to me to see the detail in the lodge. There is no real history about the seating order of each seat being higher and wider than the next. I also appreciate that women were the land owners in these tribes. In fact we heard one story today about if you wanted a divorce the woman just had to put the man's belongings outside. It's a great place to visit. If you have the opportunity please do.
