Tate, GA

North Georgia is the Marble Capital for the U.S. Many of the public buildings around the country and even in Europe have Georgia Marble in them . One of the prominent families in the marble business, which is still active today is the Tate Family. In fact in the mountains the town of Tate is a pretty little village. You can even buy homes made by Sears in the 1920's. Sitting in the village is the Tate House.

Front of the Tate house features pretty columns and gardens. Of course the home is made of marble. In fact a vein of pink marble was discovered and mined . The Tate's felt this pink marble would be a hot item. You can go into homes fro sale in our mountains and some times see fireplaces clad in pink marble.

Side view of Tate house shows fountains and gives a better look at the Marble the home is made of. There are cottages to stay at and today the home still has family living in it but can be used for functions and events. A great piece of Georgia history and really quite unique and I think pretty. Where is the Tate house?

A very famous movie , Sgt York, with a very famous actor Gary Cooper is a classic. For those of you who remember the movie The whole trouble York got into was over a piece of bottom land. In the mountains bottom land used to be the most valuable. Why? because it was flat less rocky and you could farm it. Look at the photo below. Pickens County is where this scene was shot. Take a look at the lush green and growing grass. This is bottom land. It is surrounded by mountains. Look how dense the grass is. Just as an idea Dade County Florida over 1 million people. Queens County New York over 1 million people. Many other counties over 1 million or over 500,000. Pickens county 45 minutes from North Atlanta suburbs 22,000 people ! You do not have to go West young man for wide open spaces and nature. The North Georgia Mountains are beautiful and affordable !
