Back in 1883 Tybee Beach was becoming popular with the wealthy Savannah residents and other, more affluent Americans. In 1885 the Savannah and Tybee Railroad was incorporated. The 18-mile journey from Savannah could take the better part of a day when construction of the railroad was begun on August 9, 1886. Today there's no need for a train to take you to Tybee Island from Savannah but Tybee has a perfect mix of the old charm!
Today's Tybee Island (often referred to as Savannah Beach), less than a half hour drive from Historic Savannah is a popular place to live full time and to vacation. From beach front condominiums in all price ranges, charming beach cottages to sprawling homes with big porches there's something for everyone on Tybee Island.
With a strong community spirit Tybee residents are always finding ways to have fun from the "Beach Bum Parade" to "Pirate Fest". For the ""Beach Bum Parade" spectators, line up along the parade route on Butler Avenue armed with buckets, squirt guns and hoses. What results is an all-out water war for fun loving beach bums of all ages. There's new years eve fireworks on the pier, The Christmas Parade, The Annual Tybee Island Festival of the Arts and so much more to do.
Great seafood, beautiful beaches and breathtaking sunsets make Tybee a place to visit while in Savannah!

If you have never been on Tybee Island at the start of the summer season then you are missing all the fun. This coming weekend marks the Opening of the summer season-with the Beach Bum Parade-scheduled for Friday May 16th starting at 6:30 pm.
But be warned, this is not your usually parade. Wear your bathing suit and bring out all your water pistols-and I mean the big water guns. This is a parade of a different sort -which only Tybee Island can do. There is a parade grand marshal, a parade queen, and lots of fun. The entire business community, individuals, and floats parade down Butler Ave. on Tybee Island. The trick---everyone is shooting water, throwing water-and it is a total soak down for everyone whether you are a participant or riding a float. With temperatures this weekend expected to reach 90 degrees-the water will probably be very welcomed.
( For those of you who have never visited--tybee is unique in it's character and spirit and it is totally a "laid back" community that is very progessive in land use management, recycling, and community issues)
There are still hotel rooms available on Tybee Island and in Downtown Savannah, if you want to take in this very unique event, which has been going on for years in this great beach retreat just 20 minutes from downtown Savannah.
As an FYI-Tybee Island-has been the close beach get away for many S.E. Ga. residents for over 100 years. There are some unique historic properties on the island, an historic lighthouse that has been renovated and you can tour, the old fort area that dates back to the civil war, biking trails along the old railroad tracks and Officers row which was housing back in the day-and several of these homes are currently owned by several well know movie stars. There are numerous new constructed condos, quaint beach cottages, a great campground and new hotels. Plus anywhere you stay on the island is typically only a block or two from the beach.
There are also some fabulous restaurants on the island -gourmet and casual and some of my favorites -are: the Breakfast Club-get there early but there is always a line, Georges-for dinner, The Crab Shack -for great broiled/boiled seafood-nothing fried, and Sundae's -serving a great lunch or dinner for a great price-----and there are new ones opening every week.
Plus Tybee has Art-with a great selection of art shops, galleries, boutiques, and everything beachey -and if you forgot your beach wear there are plenty of reasonably priced shops to get you going. If you like water sports-you can rent kayaks, surf boards, etc. to take in all the water fun.
So if you are looking for a fun great get away for this weekend -come down and join us.!!!
If you can't make it this weekend-Tybee is always a great "drive to" destination for a get away--any time of the year and there are some great properties available for sale -in all price ranges.
So come visit-and -give me a call and I will be happy to show you around. You can have the beach and downtown historic savannah-all with in 20 minutes-how good can that be!! And if you can't visit anytime soon -but are interested --Contact me and I will be happy to let you know what is available in the area.
