New Student Registration in Houston County Georgia

Summer has just started which means sleeping in and a carefree couple of months for many youth, work for some, and a variety of social activities for more.

For parents, put July 18th on your calendar as the date new student registrations begin in Houston County GA. The 2011-12 Houston County Public School year begins on August 1st.

Elementary Schools - 8am-11:30am and 1pm-3pm

Middle Schools - 8am-11:30am and 1pm-3pm

High Schools - Check with the individual schools for dates/times

Zone maps are available on the Houston County Board of Education website.

Required Registration Documents (must bring to enrollment unless otherwise noted)

Birth Certificate (Grades Pre-K, K and 1st)
Immunization Certificate (Georgia Form 3231)
1. Out-of-state/initial students must have started inoculations for MMR, Varicella, and Hepatitis B
2. Georgia transfer students have 30 days for records to arrive from previous school
Ear, Eye, and Dental Screening (Georgia Form 3300)
Guardianship/Custody Orders – Required at enrollment if student does not live with natural parents
Permanent Academic/Attendance Records from Previous School - Required within 30 days of enrollment
1. Student placement is temporary until official records arrive from previous school
2. New school requests records, but parents are responsible for receipt
Proof of Residency
1. Must be a full-time resident in Houston County GA (no exceptions)
2. Proof of residency documents include:
  1. Completed mortgage, closing statement, or lease agreement
  2. New address starts: cable, electric, gas, residential telephone, or water are accepted
    1. Cell phone statements are not accepted
Copy of Social Security Card or Waiver
Special Needs Medical Information

Eligibility (required age on or before September 1st of the current school year)

Pre-K - 4 years old
Kindergarten - 5 years old
1st Grade - 6 years old

Under Age Children Moving to Georgia (qualify for kindergarten or 1st grade under the following conditions):

Parents/child lived outside of Georgia for two years
Child has been enrolled in an accredited education program
Child reaches age 5 for kindergarten or age 6 for 1st graders by Dec. 31st of the current school year

One of my goals this year is to live a little greener. You know, being a bit more conservation minded so future generations can also enjoy our planet. Here are 8 easy (and cheap) tips to jumpstart your own green efforts.

Use rechargeable batteries. Between remotes, wall clocks, and gizmos/gadgets you will not only save money long-term on battery purchases but will also keep batteries out of landfills.
Heat or A/C only the rooms you use. If you have unused rooms, close the vents and doors for more efficient use of resources. Added benefit: saving $$$ on your utility bills.
Install a low-flow shower head and shorten your shower time. Easy ways to conserve water and lessen the environmental impact.
Start using Compact Flourescent Lightbulbs (CFL). According to EnergyStar, if every home replaced just 1 light with a CFL we would "prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars".
Recycle used products. Nearly every community has a recycle center, use yours.
Opt out of unsolicited mail. Save a tree and eliminate junk mail.
Install a programmable thermostat. Pre-program it to regulate the temperature when you want it most. Cost savings on both energy consumption and equipment use.
Use reusable bags for shopping (if creative, make your own).
Bonus (a little more expensive): Replace an existing appliance with an Energy Star rated model.
