Once you buy that brand new home or condo on Maui - then what? Do you need some nice upscale furnishings to make it your own? You will want to look for Latitudes, in Kahului, across from Hondador Lumber. It doesn't look like much on the outside, but once inside you will be blown away by the selection of wonderful furniture, lighting, and home decorating items. They have a showroom up front, some rooms upstairs, and a warehouse around the back. You can spend a lot of time browsing through the store, and talking with the salespeople about your needs.

Whether your'e relocating to Maui, or a Kama'aina, you can be sure to find something unique that you just have to have. New things are arriving all the time, so inquire about what you're looking for.
Plenty of parking in this part of town... the old Kahului Industrial area just off Alamaha Street. Kahului is Maui's main city, with the airport, harbor and central commercial district. You can also shop at:

(AR members: As a service to consumers I have started a Maui Map Series and realized that I should have this same info on my website. Don't forget to "pay yourself first" as they say - be sure to update your own site with plenty of good local info for consumers.)
Kahului Maui HI 96732
The map below includes the Kahului Airport, Kahului and Wailuku towns on the North Shore of Maui, surrounding Kahului Harbor. This is often refered to as Central Maui or the Central Valley. Driving EAST on the Hana Highway will take you to Spreckelsville, Paia and Haiku and eventually Hana. Driving SOUTH will take you to Kihei, Wailea and Makena on the South Shore. To the WEST are the West Maui communities.
See my website for a fully interactive version of this map and more Kahului info such as Kahului homes for sale. Don't you just love those Google Maps?

MAUI MALL- Kahului's friendly shopping center, located right across from the Kahului Harbor.

The Maui Mall has been here a long time, serving the community for decades. A recent facelift has spruced up the front, shown here above. This shopping center is very convenient for visitors on the cruise ships and Hawaii Superferry, they can just walk over from the docks across the street! The Kahului Airport and Costco are only 5 minutes away too, so be sure to stop here on your way to or from the airport. On their website you can find a complete list of vendors by category.
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday there's a Farmers Market selling locally grown produce.

If you've been here long ago, you'll remember this is where Woolworths used to be, on the back side. Now that space is occupied by various other tenants, including the County of Maui, The Indich Collection, and the Maui Mall Megaplex movie theaters.
The Maui Mall Megaplex has 12 screens so we have plenty of movies showing all the time. Currently Kahului has many venues for movie buffs, as there are also 6 screens at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center, and the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
The County of Maui Service Center is located in the southwest corner, and has the offices of the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Real Property Tax Division. I suggest you bring a book or your IPOD with you when you come, as it's an automated system where you pull a number and wait.... and wait ... and wait.

What else is here at the Maui Mall? The anchor stores are Longs Drugs and Star Markets, both located up front at 70 E. Ka'ahumanu Ave. Some other shops are:

If you're relocating to Maui and you have questions about what to expect when you get here, give me a call or EMAIL and I'll try to help. I'm an experienced Maui Realtor.

You might be curious about what's available on Maui for shopping. Do we have those big box stores that we can't seem to live without? The answer is YES we do. Here's the short list of what's available in the main city of Kahului. These are all located within a few blocks, along Dairy Road:
And that's it. Most of them are fairly new... like in the past 10-15 years or so. I suppose there will be more coming, but I have a feeling the County Council will try to put the brakes on, or at least impose some limits. I think there has already been talk about a maximum size of any future developments. They really are a bit disruptive on the status quo around here.

It's funny whenever a new big retailer comes to Maui, the locals go a little crazy and have to be the first ones in the door. This has caused people to literally camp out overnight in the parking lot of the new store, just to be part of the opening day scene. It was a hoot when Krispy Kreme came to town, it was almost more of a big deal than the Dalai Lama coming here.
I always tend to get Lowe's and Home Depot confused in my mind, as they are just a block or two apart, and they are about the same size and age. Usually a trip to Kahului involves a visit to Lowe's Depot, which means going to both of them to compare what's on the market.

In the meantime, we can get by just fine without all the others. There are plenty of smaller shops and we can always go over to Oahu if we feel the urge to splurge. Besides, it's just small island, and how much stuff do we need? Sometimes it's just easier to go to the small store for what you need, and save yourself a whole lot of walking. The old Ace Hardware on Alamaha Street is small and friendly and they have a lot of selection too.
Either way, Maui has plenty of places to spend your money, if that's what you want to do. Aloha from Maui!
