My daughter in law was visiting, so I took the morning off to go to the beach. She is pregnant so surfing was out of the question. So we settled for stand up paddling.

This is my wife in the middle and my daughter in law on the right and a friend who is an ex-world champion windsurfer. Just then the fire truck pulls up and the crew came out to train. They spend time running and swimming to stay in shape. I surf with a lot of these guys, and one of them is a good buddy of mine.

As you can see it was a great day to be training on the beach.

So I offered them my boards, Fireman Craig jumps right on it being an experienced waterman. Craig, surfs, windsurfs and snowboards with me a lot. In the line up surfing you have police officers, fireman, doctors, construction worker and Realtors out in the water.

This fireman had never been on a board before, I missed some great shots of him up side down.

When you are in trouble, you really want these guys around. They put their lives on the line daily and keep us all safe. So it was a great day hanging out with the guys. They had to get back to work and so did I.

Driving by the Paia Fire Station their truck had not return, we had a lot of fun, it was a good on Maui.

Willie Nelson played a free concert at Charley's in Paia

A few days ago we heard about it, I think it was on Facebook... Willie Nelson was going to be playing a surprise free concert somewhere on Maui. Well it was no surprise that it was in Paia, at Charley's Restaurant and Saloon, Willie's favorite Maui hangout. Word spreads fast on the coconut wireless.

Yesterday I was in the Paia office at Jim Sanders Realty, right across the street from Charley's, and I snapped some pictures of the crowd starting to line up for the free show. It was supposed to start around 7 and this was the line up about 4 pm. I hear the line up was still there at 8 pm! I bet it was a great show.

Stringent Protection for Maui Coral Reefs

The state of Hawaii takes the health of its natural resources very seriously. With innumerable visitors attracted to the natural beauty of these islands every year, it's no surprise that the unique and spectacular ecology here should be so well guarded. The protection of coral reefs in Maui and Oahu waters has been a hot topic in the news recently as a result of a few mishaps.

A Snorkel Charter lost one of its boats off Molokini due to a mechanical failure back in 2006, for which it was fined $396,000. The fine wouldn't have been so high if the salvage effort hadn't tripled the damage done to coral there. Over 1,200 coral colonies were damaged at this popular diving spot as a result of this incident.

Charley's Restaurant in Paia Maui Hawaii - a local dining experience to remember

As long time north shore Maui residents, we have been eating at Charley's for decades! It's been a real landmark in Paia, and our Jim Sanders Realty office is right across the street. So the other night we were hungry and thinking about where to eat in Paia. We decided to take our chances at Charley's... sometimes it's OK and sometimes it's really good!

Well we got lucky on Wednesday night when we picked Charley's. There was nobody in the front dining room (a little early perhaps), but a pretty good crowd in the bar in back. The comfy booths in between the front and back rooms were very inviting, and I think they must have been recently upholstered. The place looked a little "freshened up" since we were last there in fact.

Charley's is rather notorious in the area, and there have been many wild nights with police in attendance to break up the fights... usually something to do with the pool table. If you come for their famous breakfast (think macadamia nut pancakes, breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros) you might even see a famous local celebrity (think Willie Nelson).

This night we had a new waiter who was very keen to please, and he was a real winner, bringing us Stella Artois draft and pink cocktails to go with the seared sashimi. For a main event we both had the chef's special - beer battered tiger prawns in a peanut satay sauce with a hint of mint, rice and sauteed veggies, and a garden salad. They make their own papaya-seed dressing and it's always the best I've ever had.

Speaking of Willie Nelson... this is where he likes to play and sing when he gets a chance, and we've caught a show or two of his. Word of mouth ticket sales usually precede the radio announcement. If you ever get a chance to see his show here, you're in for a good time.
