Makena is part of the Ahupuaha known by the name Honua’ula. The ancient Hawaiian land division is known as an Ahupuaha. An Ahupuaha is a pie-shaped piece of land, which extends from the top of the Mountain to the sea. In this form of land stewardship fisherman lived and fished close to the ocean while other members of the Ahupuaha farmed and worked to provide food and resources for the community at higher elevations. They shared their resources among each other creating a balance with shared responsibilities of feeding the community from Mauka (up mountain) to Makai (to the ocean).

Makena and Makena Resort is home to two Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed championship golf courses featuring 36 spectacular holes along more than 1,800 acres of pristine coastline. The Maui Prince Hotel is the only hotel in Makena and is rumored to be closing by 2010 to be rebuilt into a small boutique hotel next to Maluaka Beach. Maluaka is a place of legend and the long shoreline is abundant with colorful fish. Humpback whales come to the bay to breed and care for their young. The ancient cinder cone, Pu'u Olai, rises from the dramatic black sand beach of Oneuli. Nearby, the rugged beauty of the Ahihi Kinau Natural Marine Preserve defines a reverence for the land.
