It's Friday already and time for my weekly update on new movies in Iowa City and Coralville. I'll start with the new releases for March 5 and include a couple of other ideas on things to do in Iowa City this weekend.

You can check the schedule for movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Movie Theatre in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Cinema in Iowa City...
New movies iowa city and coralville march 5

Exciting weekend for movie-goers this weekend with
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp sure to make box office with Alice In Wonderland. Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter and I'm sure he'll be sensational! The other new release this week is Brooklyn's Finest also starring some pretty top notch actors, including two of my favorites, Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke. It's a tension filled drama revolving around three police officers in the NYPD. Hardly worthy competition for Alice! So sorry guys, maybe next time...

When it comes to live entertainment you can't beat
The Mill - as readers of the Press Citizen will tell you. Tonight, members of the renowned Writers Workshop will be picking up their guitars and singing rather than reading their work - Very Dylanesque... On Saturday Dave Zollo & the Body Electric will be playing their brand of blues and rock music.

If you like your country music with dance then check out the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. Great music and great food and free wi-fi...They often have specials too like all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays...They're on Facebook and do a better job than anyone else I've seen using that media to give info on specials and upcoming events.

I'm going to round it up this week again with
The Iowa City Yacht Club. They hit my radar recently as it seems they find the bands with the most original names to play there... Hen House Prowlers & Porch Builder will be playing there tonight. (Definitely up there for original names.:-) The fun continues on Saturday with Dennis McMurrin & The Demolition Band.

For more ideas on things to do in Iowa City this weekend I've written a couple of posts pulling things together making it easier for you to find theaters and live entertainment venues in Iowa City.

New Movies and Other Events in Iowa City & Coralville This Weekend

Let's take our mind off the weather and take a look at what we've got going on in Iowa City this weekend. This is my weekly round up of movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville for January 8 through January 10. January is a trying month after the Holidays and sub zero temperatures are not helping that. If you're looking for a distraction, we've got plenty to offer here in our busy little area.

Sunny and Cold in Coralville January 8, 2010As always, I'll start with new movie releases. Three new movies to share with you this week. The first is Youth in Revolt, the screen version of the Journals of the anti-hero Nick Twisp. Reviews are good, although I've never actually seen a movie that's lived up to the book it's based on. (But maybe I'm biased as a book lover).

The next movie is yet another Vampire movie,
Daybreakers starring Ethan Hawke. It seems this movie has a twist that sets it apart from other vampire movies. That really doesn't surprise me with Ethan Hawke in it. He makes good movies, often a little different.

The last new movie for this week is Leap Year a romantic comedy starring Amy Adams. It's about a young woman who's tired of waiting for a marriage proposal and decides to take things into her own hands by making use of an Irish tradition of proposing to the man of her dreams on February 29. No doubt it won't be as easy as it sounds!

You can catch these movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Cinema in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Theatre in Iowa City.

Big night at The Mill tonight with their 12th annual tribute to the king of rock and roll. Elvis.
Too many names to mention, so you should check The Mill website for more info. Hard to believe he would have turned 75 today. I was a huge fan and devastated when he died and remember tributes on Radio Luxembourg... Right about now I'm wondering whether anyone here has ever even heard of Radio Luxembourg...hmm.

On Saturday the legendary Iowa blues band
Bob Dorr and the Blues Band make a return visit to the Mill. Looks like the Mill is kicking off the new year in style for sure. Living up to it's reputation of being the best live entertainment venue in Iowa City.

If you like your country music with dance then check out the
Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. Great food, great music and free wi-fi...They often have specials too like all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays...They're on Facebook and you'll find a list of their specials there.

Moving in a different direction,
Riverside Casino is another very popular local venue. You may be drawn by the casino, but they have plenty of live entertainment too. This weekend it's the Sweet Trouble Band playing 50's to 90's dance music.

Iowa City is a vibrant little college town and Coralville has The Mall, the Ice Rink and Children's Museum, just for starters. My post is just a snapshot of a few of the highlights of this weekend. Another good source for what's going on in the Iowa City area is the Press Citizen.
