Schiller Park landmark in the old hometown is gone

My city of birth is Chicago, where our family lived for the first ten years of my life. Parents bought a new home in Schiller Park, just across the forest preserve from Chicago in 1956. It cost them just under $18,000, all brick and plaster construction with three bedrooms and no garage.

There were a few landmarks of personal significance that have been replaced by asphalt or commerce. The Colonial Inn, once known as the White House, was where I had my first legal job. Other employment came with a forged birth certificate that said I was over sixteen years old. The Colonial Inn is gone.

Another landmark was the Horseshoe Inn, an old bar that was built close to the railroad station and the Soo Line Hotel, which is long ago demolished. The Horseshoe was where I occasionally ended my night job driving and dispatching for a local taxi company. Slim, the long departed bartender was an icon in himself. Once I inquired about a friend and neighbor who I had not seen in quite a while, and Slim got kind of serious and confided to me that, "I'm really worried about him. He just doesn't drink like he used to." Then he poured me another boilermaker for fifty cents (yes, it was a long time ago).

I haven't been in the Horseshoe in a long time, but it stood as a never changing landmark to my personal past. That is, until yesterday. Fire destroyed the building, and now there is one less reason to take a drive down memory lane on my next trip to Illinois.
