A Toad, A Pair of Pelicans, B2B, And Brunch With Randy Travis
Well, all true except they're not real. We had brunch at the local Cracker Barrel in Shiloh, Illinois, a good twelve minute drive from where we live in O'Fallon, Illinois. As is always the case, we had to wait (today 15 minutes, somedays more) to get seated. Anybody who's been to this chain knows that there's a gift shop to wander through - smart feature of their business model - so I did. (Hubby always stands in the corner with his book, sometimes takes naps while standing. lol)
So I had the pleasure of meeting these creatures:
a well-dressed and -behaved toad on one aisle,
a pair of pelicans enjoying their private moment together,
two bees flitting from crate to crate buzzing about,
and, hello! This little sunflower made me smile while waiting.
Just as our name was called, I bumped into this... none other than Mr. Randy Travis himself with his new album honoring the troops. Great trouper, he is.
What more can I ask? Oh, and a sumptuous breakfast with wonderful company to boot!

Tanks For The Memories

I read Rose King's blog this morning, and it gave me this idea of what to blog today for the 31 Days of May Challenge and for the Wild Wednesday Group.
When we moved to O'Fallon, Illinois 19 years ago from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan we were greeted by this water tank on State Street, the old main artery to the city. I liked the logo, it was quaint and highlighted the many mature trees we have. Unfortunately, the logo has been painted over to reflect the many changes in the city.

Two onion towers now exist east of the old water tank, plus two more angular looking towers northwest of the city, with a capacity of 1 million gallons each, to accommodate the growing population (now 28,000) in this Midwest town.

Just south of O'Fallon, the Village of Shiloh has its own colorful peppermint striped water tower, a cheerful beacon to those who live there and those who can see it for miles. It stands at 145', holds 225,000 gallons of water, and is built on the highest point of Shiloh, Illinois.

Further north is the famous and prominent World's Largest Catsup Bottle in Collinsville, Illinois at 170' on Illinois 159. No, it doesn't have catsup in it, but an old water tower that is a favorite landmark in our region. It was built by Brooks Foods in 1907, but the catsup plant closed unfortunately, and this tower fell into disrepair for 20 years. Through community spirit and volunteerism, it was lovingly restored and in October 1995, was featured in Midwest Living, winning one of the magazine's 16 Hometown Pride Awards Program.
So... water we going to blog about tomorrow?
