Coney Island Wiener Stand in Fort Wayne IN, A Piece Of Nostalgia

Chastity Guevara: Property Manager in Casa Grande, AZ

Fort Wayne's Coney Island Wiener Stand has been a piece of its Americana since 1914.  The nostalgic hot dog stand is a must see for any visitor of Fort Wayne, IN.

Coney Island Back

I cannot imagine making a trip to the city...or state for that matter...without making a stop to the famous Coney Island Wiener Stand.  Going to Coney Island is a local must and everyone around the area has heard of it.

When I first met my husband in 1997 he brought me to the famous Coney Island and I thought "how bizarre" that you could actually enter through the back door. I had never seen the front door until I drove by the other day to snap the photo for this post.  My husband and I brought his parents and our son to the stand for lunch our first day back in Fort Wayne.  Coney Island has been a long standing tradition in his family since his parents moved into the area over 50 years ago.

The atmosphere at Coney Island is very laid back and relaxed.  It is just a place to hang out eating a great hot dog with the famous Coney Island sauce and just reminisce with good friends.

The menu includes the Coney Island Hot Dog, cheese dog, burgers, chili soup, chips, baked beans and pie plus an assortment of fruit pops, bottled coke, Pepsi products, milk and chocolate milk, coffee and juices.  The prices are great as all of us ate for about $17 and take orders are welcome.  However, in keeping their long standing tradition Coney Island only excepts cash.

If you are visiting the Fort Wayne, IN area take time to stop by the famous Coney Island Wiener Stand and take in a true piece of local nostalgia.  Coney Island is located at 131 W. Main Street and you can reach them at 260-424-2997.

The Allen County Public Library: One Stop Along My Vacation Way

Chastity Guevara: Property Manager in Casa Grande, AZ

My husband and I used to live in Fort Wayne, In and moved away in April 2002...not long after the tragic events of 9/11 so it is very easy to remember. During the time we have been gone so much has changed that whenever we come here for vacation we spend quite a bit of time driving through the city and surrounding areas to see what all has been changed.  My husband grew up in New Haven, IN just minutes from Fort Wayne so he knows the area very well.

My son being the book lover he is always loved going to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne.  It was a large library with an excellent Genealogy section which my mother really liked.

The library was recently remodeled...the grand opening was held January 27, 2007.  Unfortunately I have no pictures from before the remodel was complete, but I took pictures of the library while we were there yesterday and I was surprised to find out, through a search of AR, that the library had never been brought up in a blog before.  The remodel project cost approximately $84 million of tax payer money.  The library originally opened in 1895 with 3,606 books and now employs over 3,000 people.

The library is 2 stories and resembles a mall to me.  It has a cafe/bookstore within its walls, self help computers for ordering new cards or reporting lost cards, an art gallery, a computer section, a patio for relaxing, 5 meeting rooms accommodating up to 500 people, a huge media section with DVD's, music and much more.  Each wing of books, youth, children's, adults, Genealogy...are all separated and very spacious.  There is even a Science and Technology wing!  I walked through the Genealogy section yesterday, which is the 2nd largest in the US, among the other wings.  I did not take any photos inside the actual library wings to avoid disrupting the researchers and other library patrons.

Near the cafe/bookstore is a shelf with used withdrawn books the library sells.  I picked up a couple, one for my son and one for me.  The books are $0.25 each or 5 for $1.00.

This is the main floor walkway.  Off to the left of this photo are the self help computers, the check out station and the general info desk.
Up ahead to the left is the adult section of books and the doors to the patio and the bookstore/cafe.

Children's Services

This is the Children's Services Department located on the main floor just inside the front doors.
The wing contains a children's play area, a slide with benches and salt water fish tanks as shown below.

My son loves fish tanks and we have always wanted to get one this size...but we haven't had the room in our house.

2nd Floor View

This is the 2nd floor.  Off to the right if this photo is the Genealogy section and a little further down on the right is Media section.

All along the edge of the middle are display cases with varying objects; gems and stones, embroidery, an object the library would like to identify, etc...

At the far end to the left is the Science and Technology wing.

The cafe/bookstore is just inside to the left.

The Northeast Indiana Market Report MAY 1, 2008

Fort Wayne Real Estate Gina Zimmerman: Real Estate Agent in Fort Wayne, IN

fort wayne skylineThere is good news on the horizon for the Northeast Indiana real estate market.

The homes currently pending to close are now at the 2006 level -- and slightly above the 2007 level.

The inventory units currently for sale are slightly higher (2900 vs. 2700) than last year. The average days that a Fort Wayne home is currently on the market is 120 days (4 months.) The average price is 97K.

Best news, though, is that the interest rates are at 5.875%. And there ARE buyers out there.

The greater Fort Wayne area is a great place to live and work.

I think most home owners are a little sad about selling this time of year. Why? Because they hate to loose their gardens. One thing I have decided to do to help people move along in selling their home is to offer garden space at no charge when we list their homes. I have two acres set aside and can till the space up in no time using my tractor. The sizes available will be a maximum of twenty by forty feet if needed. As far as water they will need to haul their own in. I have currently one person interested in this program. Once I advertise I think more will come. Lets wait and see.
